UCO Tames Lions

Bronchos Sweep Missouri Southern to Open Three-match Homestand

EDMOND – Morgan Manning stepped in for an All-American and made a career-high 24 digs to help power Central Oklahoma to a MIAA sweep of Missouri Southern Thursday night at Hamilton Field House. 
 
UCO blistered the Lions 25-19, 25-11, 25-15 to end a two-game league losing streak, improving to 11-5 on the season and 1-2 in the conference heading into a 5 p.m. Friday contest with Central Missouri. 
 
The injury-plagued Bronchos were without five players in the contest, including returning All-American libero Kaitlyn Parrott. But Manning was up to the task in her first-ever start at the position as the sophomore made several acrobatic saves in leading UCO's back row defense while adding two service aces. 
 
"We're a little banged up right now, but other players stepped up and played well," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "Morgan did a great job for us tonight and showed what she's capable of. Our offense was pretty efficient and it was a good match for us." 
 
Myla Unterweger paced the offense, hitting .324 with a match-high 13 kills in 37 attacks and just one error. Georgia Ahlert was virtually unstoppable, hitting a sizzling .562 - her fourth .500 outing of the season – with 10 kills and one miscue in 16 tries. 
 
The Bronchos also got seven kills from Taylor Fenton, while Kate Wells provided four kills, four total blocks and two service aces. Riley Roberts handed out 31 assists to go along with five kills in six attempts. Emma Halstead chipped in 14 digs and Jenna Monroe 10 in aiding the back row defensive efforts. 
 
UCO took control early in the opening set, bolting to a 7-1 lead behind two kills apiece from Unterweger and Wells along with a Manning ace. The cushion grew to 11-3 after a Roberts ace and MSSU never really threatened. 
 
The second set was close early before Wells rifled a shot down the middle to break a 4-4 tie and put the Bronchos on top to stay. It was an 8-7 lead when aces by Wells and Halstead along with four MSSU errors led to a 6-1 run that pushed UCO's advantage to 14-8. 
 
Ahlert and Roberts had two kills each the rest of the way as UCO pulled away to the lopsided win. 
 
The Bronchos polished off the sweep with the third set rout, jumping on top 5-1 behind a pair of Unterweger kills. The hard-hitting sophomore added three more kills and back-to-back aces the rest of the way.
