Bronchos Open MIAA Play Friday In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Hosts Washurn, Emporia State This Weekend

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opens MIAA play this weekend with Washburn Friday at 7 p.m. and Emporia State Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Field.

The Bronchos are 2-2-2 this season and the wins have come in each of the last two matches. UCO is 1-0-1 at home through three weeks of non-conference play. Washburn comes to Edmond with a 3-2-1 record overall, having gone 1-1-1 in away matches. Emporia State is 3-3-0 and 1-2-0 on the road.

"We wanted to do better in non-conference play but we definitely learned a lot and got better," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "We played some really good teams and no matter the result we learned from it knowing we need to be our best in conference."

Central Oklahoma went 7-2-3 in the MIAA last season and finished fourth in the league standings. The Bronchos made an appearance in the MIAA Soccer Championship final match.

This season, UCO is averaging 1.0 goal per game through six contests. The Bronchos have put up 81 total shots, 13.5 per game, and put 35 percent on goal. Defensively, Central has allowed nine goals, 1.5 per game, and teams average 10.2 shots per game against the Bronchos. Opponents have taken 32 shots on goal, 52.5 percent, of shots taken against the Bronchos.

Jordan Tanges leads UCO with two goals, while Rebekah George, Caleah Carter, Elena Conaway, and Kaitlyn Cotton all have one score each. Avery Bass has played all 540 minutes this season in goal. The senior keeper has made 23 saves and has a 1.50 goals against average allowing nine goals. She has two shutouts and a 71.9 save percentage.

Washburn comes to Edmond Friday night also riding a two-game win streak. The Ichabods from Topeka, Kansas beat Drury two weeks ago and Harding and Ouachita Baptist this past weekend. WU has a tie with previously ranked No. 25 Maryville and losses at Missouri St. Louis and at home against Mary (N.D.).

Washburn averages 1.17 goals per game on 12.0 shots per contest. The Ichabods allow 1.5 goals per game and opponents average 7.2 shots per outing.

UCO owns a 14-3-3 advantage in the all-time series over Washburn. The teams played three times last year with a tie at Washburn, a 1-0 win for the Bronchos in the MIAA Championship semifinals, and another tie in the NCAA tournament. The Bronchos advanced on PKs in the national tournament meeting. UCO had a nine-game win streak against Washburn after joining the MIAA in 2012. Since WU finally won in 2019, the series is 4-2-2 in favor of Central.

UCO is 10-4-3 against Emporia State all time. The Bronchos won the only meeting last season, 3-1 in Emporia. Central was unbeaten against ESU in the first six meetings, 4-0-2, and is 4-1-0 in the last five.

Central Oklahoma has a four-game road swing coming following this weekend's contests. The Bronchos will play at Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western next weekend, and at Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney the following weekend.
