UCO Sixth At Regional Championships

Bronchos Put Together Two Best Rounds Of Season Monday

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma is in sixth place after two trips around KickingBird Golf Monday, where the Bronchos are hosting the NCAA Division II Central Region Championships.

Teams played 36 holes Monday due to forecasted rain expected throughout the day Tuesday. The third and final round is scheduled for Wednesday.

"We competed," UCO head women's golf coach Michael Bond said. "That's all we can do at this point. We put together two really strong rounds. We threw out a really good score both rounds. Hopefully they can keep it up and make up a little ground when we can get back out there."

Central Missouri leads the 18-team field after posting a 2-under-par 558 on Monday. The Jennies shot rounds of 285 and 273. Henderson State is second at 569, Arkansas Fort Smith is third at 571, Arkansas Tech is fourth at 574, and Rogers State is fifth at 580. Southwestern Oklahoma State is tied for sixth with the Bronchos.

Jirasuda Khunarak leads UCO individually after back-to-back rounds of 1-over-par 71. The fifth-year senior from Thailand played the back nine even-par in both rounds. Khunarak sank birdie putts on Nos. 4 & 15 in the first round and Nos. 3, 15, & 17 in the second round. She sank 24 par putts on 36 holes of golf Monday, with 13 in the first round and 11 more in the second round.

Estela Castillo is in the top 20 after two rounds. The sophomore from Spain posted a 3-over-par 73 Monday morning, with one birdie and 13 par putts. She posted a 1-over 71 in the afternoon, with three birdies in the round, and 11 more par putts.

MaKaylee Cowan is 8-over after 36 holes, with rounds of 73 and 75 on Monday. The sophomore from Yukon was 2-over after nine holes Monday morning, then birdied No. 1 after making the turn. She also birdied No. 6 later in the round and finished 3-over par. Monday afternoon, Cowan sank three more birdie putts but her 5-over round was plagued by a triple on No. 3.

Scarlett Sturch shot a 10-over-par 150 Monday. The sophomore from Durant sank three birdie putts in the morning and one more in the afternoon. Layne Ailshie posted a 13-over 153 on Monday, but the freshman had a big response. After shooting a 10-over 80 in the morning round, the Fort Gibson native shot a 3-over in the afternoon, including an even-par back nine to start her second round. Ailshie birdied three holes on the day.

The top four teams, as well as two individuals not on those teams, will advance to the National Championship May 13-17 in Boulder Creek, Nevada outside Las Vegas.
