Bronchos Finish Ninth At Shangri-La

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – Central Oklahoma wrapped up its 2024-25 regular season Tuesday with the completion of the Spring Regional Preview at Shangri-La.

UCO finished ninth in the team standings after two rounds of play. The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but a lingering delay Monday morning shortened it two 36 holes.

The Bronchos posted a team score of 613, with rounds of 310 and 303 on the card. Henderson State won the team title with a 574 (289-285). Central Missouri, which hosted the event, finished second with a team score of 577 (286-291). Arkansas Tech (589), Harding (591), and Rogers State (599) rounded out the top five spots in the 20-team field.

After Monday's first round, all five UCO golfers were separated by five shots, with each player on shot better than the next. Tuesday, the top three all shot the same score of 3-over 75.

Jirasuda Khunarak finished 26th individually, a high for the team. She followed Monday's 4-over 76 with a 75 to finish at 151. MaKaylee Cowan shot a 79 on Monday and came back strong with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to finish the 36-hole event at 154.

Estela Castillo had a bigger rebound. After shooting a 8-over 80 on Monday and not being part of the counting scores, the sophomore posted a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to wrap up the tournament at 155. Layne Ailshie had the same score, posting rounds of 77 and 78. Drew Faires was also in the lineup this week and shot a 160 (78-82).

Central Oklahoma has a quick turnaround before the MIAA Women's Golf Championships April 13-15 in Kearney, Nebraska. UCO will host the NCAA Division II Central Region Women's Golf Championships May 5-7 at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond.
