Bronchos Split At Washburn

No. 5 Central Oklahoma Heads Into Final Week Tied For First Place

TOPEKA, Kan. – Central Oklahoma split an MIAA doubleheader Friday at Washburn, winning 3-2 in Game 1 before a 10-7 upset in Game 2.

UCO is 41-8 on the season and 18-4 in the MIAA. Central now moves into the final week of the 2025 regular season. The Bronchos have just one league doubleheader remaining, visiting Newman in Wichita, Kansas on Friday.

"We did not play well enough to win," UCO head coach Cody White said. "We're down to the final week of the season and every game is like a playoff game now. We were not good enough today and we need to lock in as a team and figure it out because it's time to go. We've been fortunate to be in a good spot for the postseason but we have to focus and be better."

UCO is tied for first place in the MIAA standings with Pittsburg State, who the Bronchos swept in Edmond in March. Both 18-4 squads have two games left. Pitt State plays at Missouri Southern Saturday on the final day of the season. The 2025 MIAA Softball Championship is scheduled for April 30 – May 3 in Hays, Kansas.

Terin Ritz improved to 14-3 on the season with a complete game win in Game 1. The senior allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks, but also struck out seven batters in keeping Washburn at bay.

UCO trailed 1-0 for the first three innings, but Emily Deramus hit an RBI single in the fourth to score Rylee Anglen and tie the game. Then UCO added two in the fifth.

Kennedy Clark scored Brooklyn Ryan with an RBI single and Ritz scored Rylee Lemos with a sac-fly to make it 3-1.

Washburn added one more in the fifth, but Ritz shut it down in the sixth and seventh to get the win.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. But the Bronchos couldn't stop the response from Washburn, who went through four UCO pitchers.

Sydney Ward threw two innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Shelby Beard threw two as well, giving up five runs on four hits. Jordyn Pipkin threw one inning and gave up two runs on two hits. Kaylee Bradley threw the sixth.

Ritz started UCO's first-inning rally with an RBI double to right field, scoring Anglen. Deramus followed with an RBI single to scored Clark. Ritz scored on a bases loaded hit batter to make it 3-0. Macie Andrews hit a sacrifice fly to score Deramus. Ryan kept it going with an RBI single to right center to score Ariah Mitchell. Kya Watson, who was hit by a pitch earlier, scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.

The Bronchos led 7-2 when Clark scored Anglen with a double in the third.

Washburn came back with a third-inning grand slam that cut the lead to one. Then the host Ichabods took the lead with a two-run home run in the fourth. Washburn added two more with a long ball in the fifth to make it 10-7.
