Bronchos Sweep NWOSU

Cody White Becomes Program's Winningest Coach After 6-3 and 8-5 Wins

EDMOND – No. 6-ranked Central Oklahoma subdued Northwestern Oklahoma in a hard-fought doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at wind-blown Gerry Pinkston Stadium to make Cody White the winningest coach in program history.

The Bronchos claimed 6-3 and 8-5 victories in the non-conference twinbill to move to 31-6 on the season and push White past Genny Stidham in the record books. White is now 477-166 in his 12th season at the helm, while Stidham ended her 16-year career in 2013 with 475 wins.

"All the credit goes to the great players I've been fortunate enough to coach along with the amazing assistant coaches I've had," said White, who has won 30-plus games every season at UCO but the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. "It's a humbling experience. Coach (Gerry) Pinkston laid the groundwork for this program and Genny won a national championship (2013) here, so I'm just trying to follow in their footsteps."

UCO had a tough time disposing of the pesky Rangers, but did just enough to get the job done.

"Northwestern has a scrappy bunch and hats off to Casady for how her team played today," said White of NWOSU head coach Casady Webb, who was a starting second baseman for the Bronchos in 2018 and '19. "We didn't play particularly well, but found a way to get out of here with two wins."

The Bronchos didn't have a baserunner in the first game until Ariah Mitchell drilled a one-out single to left field in the fourth, then the Bronchos broke loose the next inning to snap a scoreless tie.

Emily Deramus led off the fifth with a first-pitch double to left-center and went to third when Kya Watson reached on an error. Macie Andrews put the first run on the scoreboard with a RBI fielder's choice, with pinch-runner Sherri Mason taking third on the play.

Mason scored on Brooklyn Ryan's fielder's choice, then Rylee Anglen roped an RBI double to left-center. Rylee Lemos and Mitchell followed with back-to-back run-scoring singles and Terin Ritz's two-out RBI double made it 6-0.

The Rangers scored all three of their runs in the seventh to ruin Ritz's shutout bid, but it wasn't enough to keep White from breaking the career win record.

Ritz went the distance to pick up the win, giving up six hits and one walk while striking out five. She improved to 9-2 on the season with her 63rd career victory, moving into third place on the school's all-time list.

A pair of freshmen led the Bronchos in the nightcap as Mitchell and Makenzie Fithian combined for five hits and seven RBI.

Lemos and Mitchell got UCO going in the first inning with consecutive infield singles and Ritz drew a one-out walk to load the bases. Lemos was thrown out at the plate on a fielder's choice play that put Deramus on first, then Fithian ripped a clutch two-out, two-run single through the right side.

NWOSU made it 2-1 with a solo home run in the top of the second, but the Bronchos got that back in the bottom of the frame on Mitchell's two-out RBI single up the middle.

UCO added to its advantage in the third, with Fithian again supplying the key hit.

Ritz drew a one-out walk, Deramus followed with a single to left and Fithian plated them both with a double to left-center. Ryan made it 6-1 with a two-out RBI double to right field.

The Rangers made things interesting down the stretch, scoring twice in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull within 6-5.

UCO added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on Mitchell's two-run single. Ryan opened the inning with a single and Lemos had a one-out base hit, with both speedsters racing around to score on Mitchell's hard-hit ball up the middle.

NWOSU put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, but UCO's stout defense stymied the threat when Fithian snagged a line drive in right field and got the runner at first for a game-ending double play.

Mitchell went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Fithian 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead a 12-hit attack. Lemos, Ryan and Anglen added two hits apiece.

Sydney Ward went the first four innings to pick up the win, improving to 8-2. Shelby Beard threw the final three innings to earn her second save of the season.

The Bronchos return to MIAA play Friday, traveling to Emporia State for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
