UCO Uses Late Rallies To Sweep Griffons

Terin Ritz and Jordyn Pipkin Throw Complete Games as Bronchos Win 2-1 and 5-0

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A pair of late rallies along with complete-game pitching outings by Terin Ritz and Jordyn Pipkin powered Central Oklahoma to doubleheader sweep of MIAA rival Missouri Western Saturday afternoon.

The No. 6-ranked Bronchos took the opener 2-1 behind a tie-breaking run in the sixth inning, then scored five times in the seventh inning of the nightcap to claim a 5-0 victory. UCO improved to 29-6 on the season and 10-2 in league play with the sweep.

"I was really proud of the way we bounced back today after playing so poorly in the second game yesterday," said head coach Cody White, whose team split a twinbill at Northwest Missouri Friday. "Terin and Jordyn both threw really well and we made some big plays defensively.

"It was a battle all day. We fought hard and found a way to pull out two good wins."

The sweep gives White 475 wins for his 12-year career, pulling him into a tie with Genny Stidham for the most wins in school history. White, now 475-166 with the Bronchos, will look to  break the record Tuesday when UCO hosts Northwestern Oklahoma for a 2 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

Pitching and defense keyed Saturday's wins.

Ritz was magnificent in the circle in the first game, throwing a four-hitter in her seventh complete-game outing in 12 starts this season. The senior right-hander struck out three and walked one in improving to 8-2.

It was Pipkin's turn in the nightcap and she responded. Making just her third start of the season, the senior right-hander scattered seven hits while striking out two and walking two in moving to 3-0.

UCO broke on top 1-0 in the top of the first inning in the opener when Rylee Lemos was hit by pitch to start the game, stole second and moved to third on Kennedy Clark's single before trotting home on Ritz's base hit to center field.

The Griffons tied it in the bottom of the first with a two-out solo home run and it stayed 1-1 until the sixth when the Bronchos moved ahead.

Lemos' lead-off infield single got things going, with Ritz and Emily Deramus drawing consecutive two-out walks to load the bases. The speedy Lemos then raced home on Kya Watson's infield single for what turned out to be the winning run.

UCO managed just five hits from five different players. The Bronchos didn't have an error and Lemos highlighted the defensive outing with a spectacular diving catch into the wall while chasing down a foul ball in the fifth inning, suffering a cut on the head in the process.

The second game was a pitcher's duel throughout as neither team mounted a serious scoring threat in the first six innings before UCO finally broke through in the top of the seventh.

Brooklyn Ryan walked to lead off, then moved to second on Rylee Anglen's sacrifice bunt before Lemos reached on an error. Ariah Mitchell broke the scoreless deadlock with a run-scoring single to left field, with Lemos going to third and Mitchell to second on an error during the play.

Clark made MWSU pay for that miscue with a two-run single to left field and Ritz followed with her eighth homer of the season, this one a shot to right-center that made it 5-0.

The Griffons tried to get back in it in their final at bat, using three singles to load the bases with one out. But Pipkin got out of the jam with an infield pop-out and a harmless grounder to third.

UCO finished with 10 hits, getting two each from Mitchell and Clark.
