Rowing Season Begins In OKC

Bronchos Racing Six Times Saturday In Annual Head of the Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY – Central Oklahoma makes its 2025-26 debut with the first fall race of the year Saturday in the Head of the Oklahoma on the Oklahoma River.

The Bronchos will compete in six races throughout the day Saturday in head racing, 4,000 meters, with UCO putting together three Varsity 8+ boats and three Varsity 4+ boats.

"Opening weekend is about setting our standard," UCO head women's rowing coach Luke Reynolds said. "Calm execution, clean rhythm, and competing for each other. Full credit to our athletes; their early mornings and buy-in have been outstanding so we're excited to get out for some baseline fall racing on our home water, and see exactly where we are, and build from there."

Reynolds will lead the rowing program for the first time after being hired last month.

UCO is competing against Division I crews from Oklahoma and Rhode Island, as well as club programs from Kansas, Nebraska, Rice, Texas A&M, TCU, Texas, and Wichita State. There are 18 boats in the fours and 11 in the eights this weekend.

The UCO V8+ has a mix of returners and newcomers. Paige Ranney will coxswain the boat that includes Carlota Martinez, Rachel Harris, Raphaela Sanchez Sawyer Schreiner, Ksenia Mrsny, Tierney Westermier, Adriana Hogan, and Ava Andrews.

Ranney will lead the Varsity 4+ too, with Martinez, Schreiner, Mrsny, and Harris joining the boat as well.

UCO will send out a Novice/Freshmen 4+ at 8:50 a.m. and won't be on the water again until the afternoon. The Bronchos will race two V4+ boats at 1:45 p.m., a Novice/Freshmen 8+ boat at 2:15 p.m., and then two V8+ boats at 3:10 p.m.
