UCO Returns To Shangri-La For MSSU Invite

Bronchos Play 54 Holes Monday & Tuesday

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. – No. 6 Central Oklahoma is back on the course Monday and Tuesday at Missouri Southern State's annual Fall Invitational at Shangri-La.

The Bronchos will make three trips around the 7,210-yard Par 72 course, including two on Monday with the final round scheduled for Tuesday. All 11 MIAA programs are among the 18 teams participating. Winona State, Southern Nazarene, Southern Arkansas, Northwestern and Southwestern, Drury, and Arkansas Tech will also compete.

"We've had a good fall so far and we're hopeful to continue that here," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "We need to play well because there are some good teams in the field. We need to be focused for all 54 holes. If we play to our ability, we'll be in a good spot on Tuesday afternoon."

Central Oklahoma is sending six to Shangri-La this week. Nick Canales, Bryant Polhill, Baylor Bostick, Karsten Paciotti, and Rhett Hughes make up the five-man lineup, while Brock Jerman will go and compete as an individual.

Central heads into this week's tournament with a 273.7 scoring average, what would be 14 strokes per round better than the current school record for a single season. UCO posted an 810 two weeks ago in Edmond at the Skip Wagnon Invitational, setting a new school record for lowest 54-hole team score.

All five players in UCO's lineup are averaging under 70.0 strokes per round through nine rounds of golf this season.

Canales leads Central Oklahoma into Shangri-La this week. The junior from La Porte, Texas is averaging a blistering 68.3 this season through nine rounds of golf. He's posted rounds of par or better, five rounds in the 60s, and one school record 62 at KickingBird Golf Club in Edmond two weeks ago.

Canales' 62 tied the school record set by Todd Dayton during the 2005-06 season. Canales already tied that record once before, shooting a 10-under-par 62 at Shangri-La in 2023.

Polhill, Bostick, and Paciotti all have a 69.5 scoring average through nine rounds of golf this season. Polhill, who is from Edmond, has seven rounds of par or better with a season-low of 66 at Mules National last month. Bostick, from Duncan, Oklahoma, also has seven rounds of par or better with a season-best 64 in Edmond two weeks ago. Paciotti, from Katy, Texas, makes it 3-for-3 with seven rounds of par or better and his season low is a 65 two weeks ago in Edmond.

Hughes enters the weekend marginally behind that trio with a 69.8 scoring average. And like the others, has seven rounds of par or better through nine rounds of golf this season. Hughes shot a season-best 67 at Mules National last month.

UCO has used the same five for each lineup this season. Two weeks ago, three other individuals competed and Jerman will again this week. His 70.0 scoring average is the highest on the team. He posted rounds of 72-67-71 in his collegiate debut earlier this month in Edmond.

Central Oklahoma has one more tournament on its schedule for the fall. The Bronchos will head south for the DBU Classic at Rockwall Golf Club Oct. 27-28 before breaking until the spring semester.
