UCO Tied For First After First Round of MIAA Championships

Central Oklahoma Posted A 5-Over-Par 293 Monday At Jefferson City Country Club

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma wrapped up Day 1 of the MIAA Men's Golf Championships Monday sitting in a tie for first place in the team standings.

UCO posted a team score of 293 after its first trip around the 6,822-yard Par 72 Jefferson City Country Club. Washburn, which played with the Bronchos in the first wave of tee times Monday morning, is tied with UCO after also posting a 5-over-par 293. Missouri Western (294) is third, Central Missouri (296) is fourth, and Fort Hays State (298) is fifth.

"We didn't play very well on the front nine," UCO head men's golf coach Derrick Thompson said. "But we're still in a good spot after day one. If we avoid some of those mistakes, that'll be really good for us."

Rhett Hughes continued his recent surge with a 1-under-par 71 on Monday. The winner of the previous two MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week awards and last week's regular season finale in Washburn's Firekeeper Open, Hughes is in third place on the individual leaderboard after the first round.

Hughes started the day with a par, birdie, and bogey, then reeled off 14 consecutive pars. He added one more birdie on No. 18 to get to 1-under 71. Monday was the 15th par or better round this season for the sophomore from Edmond.

Karsten Paciotti was first off the tee and started the day with a birdie on the Par 4 No. 1 at Jefferson City Country Club. He sank five birdie putts on the day to counter two doubles and three bogeys for a 2-over-par 74. The senior from Katy, Texas finished with eight pars in the first round and is one of three Bronchos tied for ninth place individually.

Ty Hyatt and Baylor Bostick also shot a 2-over 74 on Monday. Hyatt started and ended his day with a bogey, but the sophomore from Stillwater was even through the other 16 holes, including two birdies, to get to 74. Bostick, a junior from Duncan, played well to start and finish around a snag in the middle of the day. He was 1-under after four, but 2-over at the turn. He was at 4-over par through 12 holes before getting a pair of birdies down the stretch to get to 74.

Nick Canales shot a 3-over-par 75 and 22nd individually. The junior from La Porte, Texas started the day with back-to-back birdies but was 2-over at the turn. He was 3-over through 14 before sinking his third birdie of the day. A sixth bogey on 17 put him 3-over before he finished the day with a par.

Central Oklahoma will begin Round 2 Tuesday morning. The third and final round is scheduled for Wednesday. The Bronchos won the MIAA Men's Golf Championship last season, its fourth since joining the league in 2012.
