Rhett Hughes Named MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week

Central Oklahoma Sophomore Earns Consecutive League Honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Central Oklahoma sophomore Rhett Hughes was named MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week for the second week in a row, the league announced Wednesday.

Hughes, who is from Edmond, won the Firekeeper Open in Mayetta, Kansas this week, earning his first career title with a win on the first playoff hole. He tied for first with a 54-hole 210, then beat Washburn's Myles Tarvin in a playoff to win the tournament. Hughes led Central Oklahoma to a team title as well, the second consecutive and fifth of the season.

This week at Firekeeper Golf Course, Hughes started the tournament with an even-par 72 on Monday morning. He came back in the afternoon with a blistering 6-under-par 66 in the second round to surge up the leaderboard. On Tuesday, he posted an even-par 72 for the second time to reach 210.

The first playoff hole was held on No. 18 and Hughes made his birdie putt to win the tournament. He made birdies on 18 in the first and second round and ironically parred it in the third round which forced the playoff.

Hughes finished runner-up at Pittsburg State's Tommy Riggs Collegiate Invitational last week but was the high finisher in the MIAA and earned league honors for the first time in his short career.

Central Oklahoma heads into the postseason winners of two consecutive tournament and five overall this season. The Bronchos will compete in the MIAA Men's Golf Championships at Jefferson City Country Club April 13-15. UCO won last year's postseason championship and has won four league titles since joining the MIAA in 2012.
