Central Oklahoma Races For Its Fourth National Championship In Division II Rowing This Weekend In Ohio

BETHEL, Ohio – Central Oklahoma begins the 2024 NCAA Division II Rowing National Championships Friday morning on Lake Harsha at East Fork State Park outside of Cincinnati.

UCO, which is ranked No. 3 in the country, is one of six teams competing for a national title this week. Friday morning, teams will race in both the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats with two heats for each shell. Winners advance to Saturday's Grand Finals, while non-winners will return Friday afternoon for repechage racing.

All four Great Northwest Athletic Conference squads are in Ohio for the national championships. Mercyhurst (Pa.) and Embry-Riddle (Fla.) join UCO, Western Washington, Cal Poly Humboldt, and Seattle Pacific.

Humboldt is the defending national champion, with Mercyhurst winning it all in 2022, and UCO winning each of the three national titles before that. Western Washington, winners of eight national championships in rowing, is the No. 1 team in the country this week after winning the GNAC title in Sacramento two weeks ago.

UCO's Varsity 8+ boat will race in Heat 2 with Embry-Riddle and Cal Poly Humboldt Friday morning. SPU, WWU, and MU will race just before that in Heat 1.

Central Oklahoma's Varsity 4+ boat will race in Heat 1 against Embry-Riddle and Seattle Pacific while Mercyhurst, Humboldt, and Western Washington race in Heat 2.

UCO AT NATIONALS

This season's championships will be the 12th consecutive including Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos qualified as a Varsity 8+ boat only in 2012, 2013, and 2014 before qualifying as a team in each of the last eight national championships.

UCO finished fourth in 2015 before back-to-back runner-up performances in 2016 and 2017. Then it was three consecutive national titles for the Bronze & Blue in 2018, 2019, and again in 2021. The Bronchos were fifth in 2022 before another national runner-up finish last year in New Jersey, giving UCO first or second in six of the last seven championships.

Central's Varsity 8+ boat has national championship finishes in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021, and the Varsity 4+ boat has national championship finishes in 2019 and 2021.
