Central Oklahoma Earns 2-0 Shutout Win Against Northeastern State

EDMOND – A blitzing start and star performance in goal gave UCO all it needed in a 2-0 win over Northeastern State Friday night at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 8-5-2 on the season with the win and 5-2-2 in the MIAA.

"The way we started was so big for us," UCO head women's soccer coach Amel Muhamedagic said. "The energy was great and we needed it. The girls fed off of it too and got those early goals. Avery (Bass) was great in goal tonight. Maybe the best game she's ever played for us."

Harmony Turner scored in the ninth minute to give UCO a 1-0 lead, then Rebekah George put a free kick in the back of the net to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead. That would do it for the offense.

But it was plenty.

Avery Bass made six saves in goal playing the full 90 minutes for her fourth shutout of the season. Bass has 50 saves this year and now 92 in her career as she aims to become the 10th in school history with 100 career saves.

Central Oklahoma outshot Northeastern State 15-14 in the match and had an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. NSU had a big advantage, 9-2, on corner kicks.

Turner's goal opened the scoring on Friday night. Madison Linavong took a shot on the top left side of the box and it bounced off the keeper's save back to Turner, who fired a shot and scored to put UCO on the board.

In the 22nd minute, a yellow card was issued to Northeastern on a hard foul that lined up a free kick for the Bronchos from about 30 yards out. George took the kick and put in the top left corner of the goal way out of reach of any save to give Central the 2-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the home slate Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Bronchos host Rogers State. UCO could host a quarterfinal match in the MIAA Women's Soccer Championship next month if Central can make its way into the top four spots in the league standings. UCO is fifth after Friday night's win, one point behind fourth place Northwest Missouri.

UCO takes on Newman and Pittsburg State away from home in the final two games of the regular season in November. The postseason begins Nov. 10 with the league tournament.
