SUNRISE, Mo. (Sept. 12) – A final-round comeback fell just short for Central Oklahoma Tuesday as the Bronchos finished second in the season-opening Lincoln Invitational.
UCO had the lowest round of the day, firing an even-par 288 to move from fourth to second and ended up just one shot behind Missouri Southern in the final standings. The Lions ended the two-day, 54-hole tournament with an 881 total at the 7,060-yard, par-72 The Club at Porto Cima, with UCO at 882, Rogers State 884 and Central Missouri 887.
"We played really well today and gave ourselves a chance to win the tournament," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "I was proud of the guys for the way they battled back the last two rounds after we got off to a tough start and we came up just a little short.
"But it was a good start to the season for us. We've been working hard to get ready and I liked what I saw from our guys this week."
Freshman Baylor Bostick sparked the Bronchos in the final round, firing a two-under-par 70 to end up in a tie for seventh at 219 in his first collegiate event. Bennett Baldwin and Evan Griffith both shot even-par 72, while Dylan Henderson finished with a 74 and Ross Taylor a 77.
Baldwin tied for seventh with Bostick and Griffith came in 12th with a 221 total.
Nick Canales competed as an individual medalist and placed sixth, finishing with an even-par 72 to come in with a 218 total.
UCO takes next week off before continuing its fall schedule Sept. 25-26 at the Missouri Southern Fall Invitational at Shangri-La Resort on Monkey Island.
