Bronchos Ready For Final Regular Season Tourney

The Central Oklahoma men's golf team plays in its final regular season tournament this week when the Bronchos travel to Warrensburg, Mo. for The Mule.

Thirty-six holes are on tap Monday at the 6,430-yard, par-70 Mules National Golf Club, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.

UCO has finished in the top six in seven of nine tournaments this year and is coming off its first win in its last outing. Derrick Thompson's crew captured the Broncho Invitational title March 13-14 at Rose Creek Golf Club in Edmond for its third straight top-five showing.

"We've played pretty well in our last three tournaments and want to keep the momentum going," Thompson said. "Our guys have been working really hard. We've made a lot of progress this spring and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do this week."

It's the final tune-up before the postseason begins. The Bronchos will compete in the MIAA Championships April 17-19 in Bolivar, Mo., with the winning of that tournament earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Regional May 11-13 in Winona, Minn.

UCO's lineup for The Mule will be juniors Evan Griffith, Caleb Kimmel and Kyle Hickey along with sophomores Bennett Baldwin and Dylan Henderson. Junior Ross Taylor is competing as an individual medalist.

Bennett leads the team with a 73.8 scoring average and won his first-ever collegiate title in the Broncho Invitational two weeks ago with a three-over-par 219 total. It was the fifth top-20 finish this season for the sophomore standout.

Kimmel is right behind with a 73.9 average and has a team-high six top-20 finishes this season, including three straight top-10 showings. Griffith has been in the top 20 five times, including the last three, and carries a 74.4 average.

Hickey has a 75.8 average and Henderson is at 77.5, with both having had two top-20 finishes. Taylor carries a 75.1 average with a pair of top 20s.
