EDMOND – Darkness halted first-day play in the NCAA Regional Preview Monday at KickingBird Golf Club, but not before Central Oklahoma had positioned itself atop the leaderboard.
The Bronchos were at 4-under-par for the day when play was stopped, with all five players having three holes left in the second of Monday's two rounds. Arkansas Tech was at 2-under, followed by Missouri Western at 1-over and Henderson State at 2-over.
Teams will resume second-round at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday before rolling right into the final 18 holes.
Nick Canales sparked UCO Monday and was second in the individual standings at 8-under-par. He opened with a 66 and was 4-under in the afternoon when play was stopped.
Ross Taylor started with an even-par 70 and was still at even after 15 holes in the second round. Baylor Bostick opened with a 71 and was even-par in the afternoon, Evan Griffith was 2-under in the second round following an opening-round 75 and Dylan Henderson was 4-over-par after starting with a 78.
"We played pretty well today and put ourselves in a good position," head coach Derrick Thompson said. "It was slow out there today, but our guys stayed patient and made a lot of good shots. There's a lot of teams still in the hunt, so it will be a dogfight tomorrow."
Canales started play on No. 1 and opened his morning round with three straight pars before ripping off three consecutive birdies. He bogeyed No. 8 to drop to two-under and made the turn at that before losing another shot at the par-3 11th.
The redshirt freshman rebounded, making birdies on Nos. 12, 15 and 17 to get to 4-under and parred his final hole for a first-round 66.
Canales bogeyed his second hole in the afternoon, came back with birdies on the par-5 fourth and par-3 sixth and then made five straight pars. He eagled the par-5 12th to get to 3-under for the round, then birdied his final hole – the par-5 15th – to drop to 4-under.
Taylor made three birdies in a five-hole stretch in his first-round 70 and was 1-over after four holes in the afternoon before reeling off nine pars in a row. The senior dropped back to even with a birdie on the par-5 15th before finishing with a par and is tied for 18th at even for the tournament.
Bostick had four bogeys and three birdies in shooting a morning 71. The freshman was 1-over after 12 holes in the afternoon, then birdied No. 15 and finished with two pars.
Griffith got to 2-under in the afternoon with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11 and 12 before finishing his day with four straight pars.
