Bronchos Blank Colorado State-Pueblo

EDMOND (Jan. 15) – Garrett Steidley's first-period fall and a trio of other bonus-point wins powered top-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 36-0 whitewashing of Colorado State-Pueblo Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

It was the first home dual in more than two months for the Bronchos, who posted their initial shutout of the season in staying perfect against the Thunderwolves (21-0) on Alumni Day. UCO improved to 7-1 with its 13th straight home win.

"We didn't wrestle our best, but our guys grinded out some tough wins and that's always good to see," head coach Todd Steidley said. "We had a hard week of practice and that might have affected us a little.

"The bottom line is we need to get better. Today was another opportunity for us to do that and for the most part I thought we did. We just need to keep working."

Garrett had the lone fall of the day, moving up from his normal 125-pound slot to 133 and getting the pin at the 2:50 mark after striking for an early takedown.

The Bronchos also got major decisions from 125 Studd Morris, 174 Anthony DesVigne and Hvy Shawn Streck.

Morris took control early with two takedowns and a near-fall in grabbing a 6-1 first-period lead. The 10th-ranked junior added two reverses, a penalty point and more than four minutes riding time in posting a 12-1 rout.

DesVigne also jumped out to a 6-1 first-period advantage behind a takedown and four-point near-fall. The junior tacked on an escape, takedown and riding time point in breezing to a 10-2 victory.

Streck continued his takedown dominance in the final bout. The second-ranked big man racked up six takedowns – giving him 30 in his last five matches – in a 14-5 romp.

The Bronchos also got wins from 141 Nate Keim, 149 Brik Filippo, 157 Gabe Johnson, 165 Ty Lucas, 184 Alex Kauffman and 197 Emmanuel Skillings.

Keim prevailed 4-3 on a riding time point, while Filippo had a pair of first-period takedowns in a 5-2 victory. Johnson prevailed 9-5 behind a three-takedown attack and Lucas scored two opening-period takedowns in a 6-4 win.

Kauffman posted a 4-0 shutout, scoring a first-period takedown and racking up four minutes riding time. Skillings had a pair of takedowns in a 6-4 win while making his season debut in place of injured national champion Dalton Abney.

The Bronchos go to Kearney, Neb. next week to meet Western Colorado and No. 22 Chadron State in the Midwest Duals, then are back home Jan. 26 to host No. 14 Fort Hays State.
