UCO Beats OC To Open 2022 Campaign

OKLAHOMA CITY – Central Oklahoma beat Oklahoma Christian 2-1 Thursday night to open the 2022 regular season with a victory.

The Bronchos got an early goal from Emily Tincher and scored on a penalty to take a 2-0 lead before a late penalty against UCO gave way to Oklahoma Christian's only score of the night.

"That was good for the first game," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We didn't like the red card and that we gave up the shutout, but we got the win. We played a lot of younger players and they got some good experience."

Central Oklahoma true freshman Avery Bass played her first collegiate game Thursday and the goalkeeper from Broken Arrow didn't act like it. She made four saves in the game and only conceded a goal on the late penalty. Bass made one save in the first half and three more in the second half.

UCO also had one team save in the game.

The Bronchos scored in the 17th minute to go ahead of OC. Madison Linavong used some nifty footwork to create space before crossing a ball toward Tincher, who put home the goal. It was the first career goal for Tincher, a third-year sophomore from Deer Creek.

The game remained 1-0 through halftime, but UCO found another early in the second half.

An OC foul resulted in a penalty kick for the Bronchos. Fourth-year junior Monika McGee, the team captain that's played in all 44 games for the Bronchos since arriving on campus in 2019, stepped up and slotted home the penalty to give Central the 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.

Central Oklahoma held firm to that lead for over 20 minutes. But with just over 10 to go, Brooke Franklin was whistled for a foul. She already had one yellow card, and another turned red. OC was awarded a penalty kick and scored its only goal then. Franklin left the game and the Bronchos played one person down for the final stretch.

UCO still held on for the win. The Bronchos now own a 13-0 record against the Eagles.

Central Oklahoma is back in action this weekend. The Bronchos are traveling to Joplin, Missouri for a neutral-site contest against Minnesota State. MSU is taking on Missouri Southern Friday night before a meeting with the Bronchos Sunday at 1 p.m.

UCO is scheduled to make its home debut Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. against East Central at Tom Thompson Field.
