No. 10 Bronchos Sweep No. 2 Rogers State

EDMOND (April 16) – Brighton Gilbert's third-inning single produced the only run in a tense 1-0 second-game win that completed Central Oklahoma's doubleheader sweep of Rogers State Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium in a showdown of top-10 teams.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos beat the No. 2 Hillcats 6-2 in the opener before Bailey McKittrick and Kylee Lynch teamed up for a four-hit shutout in the nightcap. UCO improved to 38-6 overall and 17-1 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play in winning its final home games of the regular season while dropping Rogers to 36-6 and 15-3.

"That was two really good teams going at it and we were fortunate to come out on top today," said head coach Cody White, whose team has now won 11 straight games. "I was really proud of the way we fought. We made some big plays defensively, came up with a few key hits and our pitchers threw well."

McKittrick, who has seen limited action this season after having off-season back surgery, had a gutsy four-inning outing in making just her second start of the spring in the second game.

The senior right-hander scattered three hits and walked one before giving way to Lynch, who allowed one hit with no walks and one strikeout in the final three frames. McKittrick earned the win, moving to 4-0, while Lynch picked up her third save.

"We wanted to get three innings out of Bailey and she gave us four," White said. "She's really worked hard to come back and has done a great job for us. Those were four big innings, then Kylee came in and closed the door."

Both benefitted from some excellent defensive plays.

Center fielder Lexy Dobson had a highlight-reel running catch in right-center to end the fourth inning when RSU had a runner at third base, then second baseman Tarin Dubler made a sensational diving grab of a sinking liner in short center field for the first out of the seventh.

The only score of the hotly-contested game came in the bottom of the third.

Mikayla Rutland got it going with a one-out single to right-center and stole second before scoring on Gilbert's two-out line-drive single to left field. And that one run turned out to be enough.

UCO finished with seven hits, getting two each from Jacee Minter and Korbyn Skipworth.

UCO took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when Dubler reached on a two-out error, went to second on Minter's infield single and scored on Amelya Huggins' base hit to left field.

Rogers scored its only two runs of the day in the top of the second, only to see the Bronchos regain the lead in their half of the inning.

Dobson opened with an infield hit, making a head-first dive to beat the throw at first, and Shayleigh Odom followed with a single up the middle. Rutland advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Shayla Harper drove in one run with a groundout and Gilbert  put UCO on top 3-2 with an RBI single to left field.

The Bronchos gained some breathing room in the fourth with a three-run volley that made it 6-2.

Rutland got things going with a one-out single and stole second, then Gilbert drew a two-out walk. Rutland scored on an error that allowed Dubler to reach base and Minter came through with a two-run double to give UCO its 6-2 cushion.

Minter had two of Central's seven hits.

Lynch earned the pitching win with her 17th complete-game outing of the season. She gave up eight hits and one earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts in moving to 19-1.

UCO goes on the road next weekend for four MIAA games with back-to-back doubleheaders at Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.
