Bronchos Split Doubleheader At UNK

KEARNEY, Neb. (April 22) – No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma couldn't get its offense untracked in a second-game loss to Nebraska-Kearney as the Bronchos split a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Friday afternoon at Patriot Park.

Mikayla Rutland and Shayleigh Odom drove in three runs apiece in a 9-4 first-game victory, but UCO managed just three hits in dropping the nightcap 3-0 to end a 12-game winning streak.

The Bronchos, now 39-7 overall and 18-2 in league play, move on to Hays, Kan. Saturday for a noon twinbill against Fort Hays State.

"We just couldn't get anything going in the second game," head coach Cody White said. "Their pitcher did a nice job keeping us off balance and we didn't adjust like we needed to. We've just got to put this behind us and come out ready to go tomorrow."

UCO was held hitless in the first three innings of the opener before breaking a scoreless tie with five runs in the top of the fourth.

Jacee Minter reached on a one-out error to get things going, then Huggins had Central's first hit with a single to right-center. Korbyn Skipworth followed with another single to load the bases and Odom cleared them with a two-out triple to right field.

Rutland capped the onslaught with her sixth homer of the season, this one a two-run line drive to left-center field that made it 5-0.

The Lopers got one run back in the bottom of the frame, but UCO answered with three more scores in the fifth.

Tarin Dubler's single to right field and Minter's double down the left field line put two runners in scoring position for Amelya Huggins and she promptly drove them home with a double to center field. Pinch-runner Layne Smith moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Skipworth's base hit to right-center to give the Bronchos an 8-1 advantage.

UCO made it 9-1 in the sixth when Shayla Harper led off with a double to right-center, went to third on a passed ball and scooted home on Dubler's RBI fielder's choice.

UNK scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-4, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Huggins, Rutland and Skipworth had two hits apiece to lead a 10-hit attack. Kylee Lynch went the first six innings in the circle to pick up the pitching win, improving to 20-1.

Rutland had two of UCO's three hits in the second contest.

The Lopers scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the first before Bailey McKittrick came on in relief and dominated UNK  the rest of the game. The senior right-hander allowed just one hit and struck out eight in a sensational six-inning outing, retiring 17 consecutive batters during one stretch.
