Central Oklahoma Outpaces Seattle Pacific

Bronchos Battle Top-Tier Division II Opponent

OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 1 Central Oklahoma hosted a pair of formidable foes Saturday on the Oklahoma River and the Bronchos earned wins in six different races.

UCO welcomed No. 6 Seattle Pacific in a crucial matchup of top-tier Division II programs both competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Central also had Kansas in town for the morning session of 2,000-meter racing.

"We raced well today and I think most importantly we can take something from today's racing and learn from it and get better," UCO head rowing coach Brian Ebke said. "We know we can get better in some areas after today and that's the hope is we continue to get better as the season goes along."

UCO took third in the Varsity 8+ race behind KU's 1V8+ and 2V8+ but the Bronchos were pleased to finish well in front of Seattle Pacific. The Broncho boat crossed the finish line in 6:54.34, less than one half second behind the 2V8+ boat from Kansas and 11 seconds in front of SPU's shell.

Central followed with a fourth-place finish in the Varsity 4+ race. KU's 1V4+ was first before SPU and KU's 2V4+ was third in front of the Bronchos, who crossed the finish line in 7:56.71.

Central Oklahoma and Seattle Pacific returned after a short break for more racing and the latter session was all UCO.

The Broncho V8+ beat SPU again in near identical times. UCO finished in 6:56.45, just two seconds off its earlier mark, and SPU finished in 7:04.01, one second faster than its earlier mark.

In the second edition of the Varsity 4+ race, the roles were reversed. Central Oklahoma took the challenge and came away with a win, crossing the finish line in 7:55.49, 1.3 seconds in front of SPU's 7:56.77.

There were five other races on Saturday as the two DII schools got more work in for the other boats.
