Bronchos Take Two From Washburn

EDMOND (March 13) – Fast starts in both games sparked Central Oklahoma to a sweep of Washburn in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

The No. 10-ranked Bronchos scored four runs in the first inning of the opener on their way to a 15-1 drubbing that ended WU's 17-game winning streak, then jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap en route to an 8-5 victory.

UCO improved to 21-3 on the season and 4-0 in league play in completing a weekend sweep to open the MIAA schedule. The Ichabods fell to 19-8 and 2-2.

"Washburn has been playing really well the last few weeks, so I was really happy with the way we played today," head coach Cody White said. "We were really focused and did a great job getting on top early, which set the tone in both games."

The Bronchos got the first-game rout started early with the opening-inning outburst, with Brighton Gilbert's RBI triple and Tarin Dubler's run-scoring single highlighting the four-run volley.

WU scored its lone run in the second and Central answered with three in the third as Shayla Harper had a two-run single and Lexy Dobson an RBI base hit to make it 7-1.

The offensive assault ramped up in the fourth with a eight-run explosion that upped the lead to 15-1.

Mikayla Rutland's grand slam to left field was the big blow in that inning, while Jacee Minter added a two-run double and Dubler an RBI single.

UCO banged out 14 hits in the five-inning rout. Gilbert and Dubler both went 3-for-4, with Dobson and Amelya Huggins adding two hits apiece.

Kylee Lynch stayed unbeaten (12-0) in the pitching circle with another complete game gem. She allowed two hits and gave up one walk with three strikeouts while needing just 59 pitches.

The Bronchos grabbed control in the second inning of the nightcap, getting a three-run double from Dobson and RBI single from Huggins in going up 5-0.

The Ichabods scored once in the third before UCO pushed its lead to 8-1 in the fourth when Dubler ripped a three-run double to center field.

WU pulled within 8-5 in the fifth, but could get no closer.

Isie Cox went the first 4 2/3 innings to earn the pitching win, improving to 3-1. Bailey McKittrick gave up one hit in 1 1/3 innings of shutout relief before Lynch came on to record the final three outs in the seventh to pick up her first save.

UCO wraps up its six-game homestand Tuesday, hosting Southeastern Oklahoma for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
