Bronchos Blast Southeastern

EDMOND (March 15) – Shayla Harper and Amelya Huggins slugged two home runs apiece to ignite a long-ball assault that carried No. 8-ranked Central Oklahoma to a runaway sweep of Southeastern Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Field.

The Bronchos belted seven homers on the day, hitting two in an 8-0 first-game romp and five – the second-best single-game total in school history – in a 9-1 second-game trouncing. UCO finished with 20 hits on the day, collecting four doubles in addition to the seven homers.

Kylee Lynch and Isie Cox allowed a combined six hits in complete-game pitching outings and Central also shined defensively, committing no errors on the day.

"We played really well in every phase of the game," head coach Cody White said. "Our offense has been great lately and we certainly swung it today. The pitching and defense was also strong and I like our chances when we put all three of those together."

Lynch continued her dominating season with another masterpiece in the circle in the opener, needing just 45 pitches to notch her 11th complete game and fourth shutout.

It was the sixth two-hitter of the season for the sophomore standout, who gave up a pair of harmless infield singles. Lynch struck out three and didn't walk a batter in moving to 13-0.

UCO scored the only run it would need in its first at bat. Harper led off with a walk, stole second, took third on Brighton Gilbert's infield hit and scooted home when Gilbert was thrown out trying to steal.

Huggins started the second with a solo shot to left field and the Bronchos broke the game open with five runs in the third.

Another lead-off homer got things going, with Harper driving the first pitch deep over the center field fence. Tarin Dubler singled and Huggins drew a two-out walk before Korbyn Skipworth plated both with a double to left-center.

The speedy Skipworth race all the way from second on Shayleigh Odom's single to first base and Odom ended up scoring on an error to push UCO's lead to 7-0.

Minter's RBI single made it an 8-0 advantage in the fourth, then Lynch quickly put SOSU down in order in the fifth to close out the run-rule rout.

Harper went 2-for-2 with three runs scored at the plate to lead UCO's nine-hit attack.

Cox was also strong in the circle for the Bronchos in a 48-pitch outing. The sophomore gave up four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out one in improving to 4-1.

The Savage Storm scored their lone run of the day in the top of the first, but UCO answered quickly in its initial at bat with four runs behind a pair of long balls.

Harper led off the inning with a single and Minter put the Bronchos on top with a two-out line-drive shot to center field. Huggins walked to keep the inning alive, then Skipworth launched a bomb to left-center for her first career homer.

Central made it 6-1 in the third when Minter led off with a single and Huggins followed with her second homer of the day, mashing a high fly far over the center field wall.

Harper bashed a first-pitch moon shot to right-center to get the inning started for her second dinger of the day, with back-to-back doubles by Dubler and Minter making it 8-1.

The Bronchos ended the game early in the bottom of the fifth when pinch-hitter Taylor McKittrick led off the inning with her first homer of the season, this one a drive to center field.

Minter's 3-for-3 performance highlighted an 11-hit attack, while Harper had two hits.

UCO travels to St. Joseph, Mo. this weekend for five games in the Hy-Vee Classic, including meetings with No. 10 Augustana and No. 21 Minnesota State-Mankato.
