UCO Sweeps Hornets To Open MIAA Play

EDMOND (March 12) – Jacee Minter belted a pair of three-run home runs as No. 10-ranked Central Oklahoma opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with a doubleheader sweep of Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Gerry Pinkston Stadium.

Minter had a three-run blast in the first inning and Kylee Lynch threw a two-hit shutout in an 8-0 first-game romp, with Minter's sixth-inning three-run shot capping off a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap.

The defending league champion Bronchos, now 19-3 on the season, will be back in action Sunday for a 1 p.m. twinbill against red-hot Washburn. The Ichabods swept Newman Saturday in their MIAA opener and are 19-6 with a 17-game winning streak.

"It's always good to start the conference season with a couple of wins," said head coach Cody White, whose team is now 11-0 at home. "We made some mistakes, but came up with some timely hits and our pitchers did a good job."

UCO wasted no time taking command in the opener, erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on its way to ending the contest on the eight-run rule after five.

Shayla Harper and Brighton Gilbert opened the inning with back-to-back walks and advanced on Tarin Dubler's sacrifice bunt before trotting home when Minter launched a moon shot over the left-center field wall.

Terin Ritz and Shayleigh Odom drew two more walks, then Korbyn Skipworth's two-out infield single loaded the bases. Dobson and Harper followed with consecutive two-run singles up the middle to complete the early onslaught.

Central made it 8-0 in the third when Skipworth reached on an error and ended up scoring on another fielding miscue.

That was more than enough cushion for Lynch, who finished off her third shutout of the season. The sophomore southpaw – who retired the first 11 batters she faced – gave up solo hits in the fourth and fifth innings, didn't walk a batter and struck out three in improving to 11-0.

The Bronchos broke on top early in the second game as well. Gilbert reached on a one-out error, went to second on Dubler's single and took third on a fielder's choice before scoring on Ritz's base hit through the left side.

Emporia tied it with a single run in the top of the third, but UCO answered right back in its half of the inning.

Gilbert got things going again with a lead-off single to left field, Dubler followed with a single to right field and Ritz was hit by pitch to load the bases with one out. Amelya Huggins' hit to left field pushed across one run, then Skipworth made it 4-1 with a two-RBI single through the right side.

The Hornets pulled within 4-2 in the fifth, but Central put the game away in the sixth.

Lexy Dobson led off with an infield single and Dubler reached on a two-out error to set the stage for Minter, who clubbed her fifth homer of the season to left-center field.

The Bronchos finished with nine hits, getting two each from Dubler and Minter.

Isie Cox allowed two runs on four hits in going the first five innings to pick up the pitching win, improving to 2-1. Bailey McKittrick gave up one hit in two shutout innings to secure her first save of the season.
