Central Drops Series Opener

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened up its three-game series against Missouri Southern Saturday with a  5-2 setback at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 10-7 on the season following the loss and are 4-3 in MIAA contests. UCO is scheduled to play the second game of the series Sunday at 3 p.m. and will wrap up the meetings Monday at 1 p.m.

"Our offense has been doing really well lately but we couldn't get it going tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "Our pitching wasn't bad, I think we should have been able to put up a few more runs. We'll try to fight back tomorrow."

Jacob Bailey got the start for Central on Saturday and the senior right-hander gave up four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work. He did strike out six and only two of the four runs were earned.

Lawson Isaacs threw 1 1/3 innings and gave up the fifth Missouri Southern run. Beaux Bonvillain, Owen Logan and Brian Skillman threw the final 2 2/3 innings, only allowing one hit. The trio issued no walks and struck out five batters. Bonvillain fanned two and Skillman struck out the side in the top of the ninth inning.

Central Oklahoma welcomed Southern to Edmond this weekend with a scorching hot offense. The Bronchos were averaging 14 runs per game over the last four games. But UCO only managed three hits Saturday.

Two of those came in the bottom of the second inning and that was when both of Central's runs came.

Austin Lambert led off the inning with a double to right field. He scored on the next at bat when Kaleb Glass reached on an error by the MSSU right fielder. Wyatt Gray singled after that to score Glass and at the time, that made the game, 3-2.

Zac Freeman recorded Central's third and final hit. He led off the ninth with a single but UCO couldn't manage the late rally to follow.

UCO's series was originally scheduled to begin Friday night, but a snow day in Edmond forced the delay to Saturday. The Bronchos will host MSSU Sunday at 3 p.m. and Monday at 1 p.m. to wrap up the MIAA series.
