UCO Hosts Missouri Southern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team is scheduled to open a three-game MIAA series against Missouri Southern Saturday at 6 p.m. at Wendell Simmons Field.
 
Central is also scheduled to play at 3 p.m. Sunday and 1 p.m. Monday. The series was originally scheduled to begin Friday but weather forced a delay.
 
The Bronchos welcome Missouri Southern to Edmond with a 10-6 record on the season. UCO is 4-2 in MIAA play, having won both of its first two series two games to one.
 
Missouri Southern is 12-8 this season and has a 3-3 record in league play. The Lions from Joplin, Missouri lost two of three against Pittsburg State before taking two of three from Northwest Missouri. All six MIAA games MSSU has played were played in Joplin.
 
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA BY THE NUMBERS
 
UCO is 10-6 this season and the Bronchos are averaging 8.6 runs per game. Central does that scattering 9.7 hits per game. Seventh-year head coach John Martin's squad is hitting .291 as a team through 16 games played and has 49 extra-base hits (25 doubles, 20 home runs, four triples).
 
LEADERS AT THE PLATE
 
Landen Wood has a team-high .388 batting average. He's 19-for-49 at the plate with 17 singles, a double and a homer. He has nine RBIs and nine runs scored.
 
Clayton Peterson is hitting .375 with a team-high 24 hits. He has four doubles and two home runs. He also has a team-high 23 RBIs and has scored 14 runs.
 
Seth Gray (.314) has five doubles on 11 hits this season. Garrett Takamatsu (.305) with a team-high nine home runs. He has 22 RBIs. Shane Nixon (.300) has five extra-base hits and a team-high 21 runs scored.
 
STAFF STUFF
 
Central Oklahoma has a 6.30 team earned run average after 16 games played. The Bronchos are allowing 6.7 runs per game off 8.6 hits per game. UCO has 169 strikeouts in 16 games, just over 10 per game.
 
Jacob Bailey, Chase Lorg and Tucker Elliott make up the three-man starting rotation for the Central pitching staff.
 
Bailey has a 8.53 ERA and has 26 strikeouts in 19 innings of work. He did throw seven no-hit innings in St. Joseph, Missouri last month. Lorg has a 8.00 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 18 innings. And Elliott has 6.16 ERA with a team-high 28 strikeouts in 19 innings of work.
 
UCO has quality arms on the backend of the staff too. Kyler Patterson has a 0.77 ERA in seven appearances. He has 14 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings of work and has three saves on the season. Beaux Bonvillain has a 1.54 ERA with 15 Ks in 11 2/3 innings of work. He has one save this season.
 
A LOOK AT THE LIONS
 
Missouri Southern is 12-8 this season and the Lions are averaging 8.3 runs per game on 10.6 hits per game. The MSSU pitching staff has a 6.55 team ERA and concedes 7.2 runs per game off 9.8 hits per game.
 
Cole Woods (6.65 ERA) leads the team with 38 strikeouts in 23 innings pitched. Logan VanWey (7.94) has 32 Ks in 22 2/3 innings of work.
 
Tommy Stevenson, hitting .440, leads the team in batting average, hits (33) and home runs (10). He also has five doubles and a team-high three triples. Six Lion batters have at least 20 hits in 20 games so far this season.
