Central Oklahoma Opens MIAA Play at Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The UCO baseball team is scheduled to open MIAA play this weekend against Missouri Western. After a flurry of snow showers and schedule changes, the squads have landed on a three-game series that begins Saturday at 3 p.m., continues Sunday and wraps up with a final game Monday afternoon.

Central Oklahoma heads into conference play with a 5-3 overall record. The Bronchos have won two in a row and both of those victories came early via run-rule. Missouri Western is 2-7 on the season. This weekend will be the home opener for the Griffons, who are looking for an official win streak after snapping a four-game losing streak with a win over Truman State last weekend.

UCO owns a 31-20 record against MWSU all time. The series began in 1985 with a 12-2 win by the Bronchos. The teams played in six consecutive seasons from 1996-2001 but didn't play again until Central Oklahoma joined the MIAA in 2012.

Central swept the season series last year, taking all three games in Edmond.

UCO heads to St. Joseph averaging 7.2 runs per game on 9.5 hits per game. The Bronchos have a .284 team batting average. Defensively, Central allows 6.6 runs per game on 8.2 hits per game. UCO has a 6.12 team earned run average after eight games played.

Landen Wood leads UCO with a .542 batting average in seven games played. He is a combined 13-for-24 at the plate with all 13 hits going for singles. He also has three RBIs and three runs scored.

Dave Janssen is hitting .348 in eight games played. He has eight hits, including a pair of doubles. Clayton Peterson is hitting .345 in eight games, with 10 hits including one home run.

Seth Gray, hitting .318, leads UCO with three doubles. Shane Nixon (.310) also has a pair of doubles, and Garrett Takamatsu (.300) has one double and a team-high four home runs.

Kaleb Glass is hitting .208 but he has two doubles, one triple and one home run.

Wood, Janssen, Nixon and Glass all have a team-high three stolen bases apiece.

Central's pitching staff has given up more runs than they'd like, but UCO does still produce a high rate of strikeouts. The Bronchos have 93 total strikeouts in eight games, an average of 11.5 per game. And opponents are only hitting .251 against the Bronchos.

Tucker Elliott has yet to earn a decision on the mound in two starts, but the right-handed pitcher has a team-high 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings. Jacob Bailey, who is 0-1 in two starts, has 11 Ks in eight innings. Coby Grimsley is 1-0 and has 10 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Missouri Western welcomes UCO to St. Joseph averaging 4.8 runs per game on 7.6 hits per game. The Griffons have a .229 team batting average. Zach Hanlan (.455) has a team-high four doubles and Alex Crouch (.333) has a team-high four home runs.

MWSU allows 8.0 runs per game on 8.6 hits per game. Matt Kesel has 14 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings on the mound.

Central Oklahoma was scheduled to play Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday following this MIAA series at Missouri Western. With the series being shifted back one day, the UCO-SOSU game will now be contested Wednesday, March 2 in Durant, Oklahoma.
