Bronchos Fall In Finale At NSU

Central Oklahoma Drops Game 3 8-2

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma dropped the series finale at Northeastern State Tuesday, falling 8-2 in the third and final game of the MIAA series.

UCO is 23-21 following the loss and 14-16 in the MIAA. The Bronchos remain in a tie for eighth place in the league standings with six games remaining. Central Oklahoma hosts No. 22 Central Missouri for its final three home games this weekend and wraps up the season with three games at No. 28 Northwest Missouri next weekend.

The 10-team MIAA Baseball Championship is being hosted by Central Oklahoma May 6-9 at Wendell Simmons Field.

UCO is tied with Washburn for eighth place. The Ichabods finish with six home games, three against Emporia State and three against No. Pittsburg State. Washburn does own the tiebreaker with UCO after winning 2 of 3 in Edmond in March. UCO and WU are both five games clear of Northeastern State and Fort Hays State. Those two 9-21 teams play next weekend in a series that could decide the 10th and final team in the MIAA Baseball Championship.

Tuesday in Tahlequah, Central Oklahoma was swept by NSU and similar to the last meeting in eastern Oklahoma, the Bronchos had an early lead.

UCO scored in the first and third to take a 2-0 lead, but the host Riverhawks scored three in the fourth to take it back, added one in the fifth, and then put up four with one swing of the bat in the seventh to make it 8-2.

Colton Ayres scored on a Trevor Rowe sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning. He led off the game with a double, moved to second on passed ball, then scored on Rowe's flyout to center field to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Caleb Castle hit a two-out double in the third, then Drake Lee followed with a single up the middle to score Castle and give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead.

Brody Berlowitz got the start for Central Oklahoma and the sophomore closer threw three shutout innings. He allowed just three hits and got five NSU flyouts, two groundouts, and one strikeout to get through the third inning ahead 2-0.

Michael Lopez came on to pitch the fourth and he gave up three runs on four hits. Mylan Childers came out for the fifth, hit the first two batters, gave up a double steal, then allowed one run to score on an RBI groundout. Childers gave up one single and hit another batter in the sixth but got out of the inning with the game still 4-2.

Cortt Gentry came out for the seventh and he gave up a two-out grand slam. An error earlier in the inning could have prevented the damage from being done, but UCO trailed 8-2 and that was the final. Caden Hinther relieved Gentry and got the final out in the seventh, then three in the eighth to keep it at eight.

Central Oklahoma had five hits in Tuesday's game. Ayres, Castle, and Carson Taylor each had doubles. Lee had the RBI single and Haden O'Toole added a base hit as well.

UCO hosts UCM beginning Friday at 5 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday's finale will begin at 1 p.m. following a Senior Day recognition.
