Central Oklahoma Ties Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team tied Newman 2-2 Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup between the nearby MIAA schools.

Central had an early lead but also faced a halftime deficit before tying the game late in the second half. Two overtime periods weren't enough for the Bronchos to find a golden goal however. Central Oklahoma is now 3-2-1 on the season.

"We did a good job of creating chances and we had a lot of opportunities," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "I think we plenty of chances to take the lead back and score some more goals but it didn't happen today. We did do a good job of limiting their chances though and that's a positive we need to focus on. Our defense was good today."

UCO outshot Newman 25-5 in the game, which spanned 110 minutes with the two overtime periods.

Early in the first half, following a Newman free kick, Madison Linavong sent a ball ahead of everyone nearly 50 yards downfield. Kassidy Collins raced ahead of the pack and beat the Newman goalkeeper to the ball about 20 yards in front of the goal where she connected to net her fifth goal of the season and give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.

Newman would equalize though with a similar play, getting a ball around UCO goalkeeper Caroline Faulkner way out at the top of the box and into the back of the net to make it 1-1 with in the 38th minute. Then Newman made quick work of its second goal to take a first-half lead. The Jets scored again just three minutes later to go ahead 2-1 with four minutes remaining in the first half.

Central outshot Newman 7-4 in the opening half but the shots on goal mark was tied, 4-4.

In the second half, Central finally equalized itself. Collins got a good through pass down the right side and took it all the way to the end line before crossing it in front of the net passed the Newman keeper and right to Eden Jones, who simply tapped it in from about two yards out to tie the game, 2-2, in the 61st minute.

The Bronchos increased by a long margin the shot differential in the second half, outshooting Newman 11-1 in the latter 45 minutes. But time expired before either team could add to its total.

In the first overtime, Central had a couple of good looks, and again outshot Newman, this time by a 4-0 margin. But yet again, after the 10 minutes expired, neither team had an advantage. The same script played out in the final 10 minutes of overtime period No. 2 as the Bronchos finished tied, 2-2.

UCO will play its final non-conference game against Rogers State on the road this coming Friday before opening MIAA competition at Northeastern State Sunday.
