Central Oklahoma Visits Central Arkansas

CONWAY, Ark. – The University of Central Oklahoma will visit the University of Central Arkansas this weekend for a fall tennis tournament Friday and Saturday at the UCA Tennis Courts.

This is the second event of the new year for the Bronchos. Central Oklahoma went to Tyler, Texas two weeks ago for the TJC Invite and saw over a dozen victories. The Bronchos were national semifinalists last season.

"We saw some pretty good competition in Texas and we'll see some better competition in Arkansas," Joe Vann, first-year head tennis coach said. "It was good for the team to get that first event in, and I think we'll be able to keep building with this weekend. We're looking forward to it."

Mae Canete, who was named ITA Freshman of the Year last season after posting a 21-0 singles record, is off to a 3-0 start in this her sophomore season. The Los Angeles native won the top flight singles tournament in Texas, winning all three matches in straight sets.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina, a two-time MIAA Player of the Year, is set to make her season debut this weekend after not competing in Texas two weeks ago.

Christine Canete is 2-1 in singles play after one event and is also 2-1 in doubles play after taking runner-up in the Flight 1 Doubles finals with her older sister, Mae.

Grace Chadick and Tizia Brocks, as well as Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar are also in the lineup for this weekend.

Central Oklahoma is off next weekend but is scheduled to host the ITA Central Regional in October at Edmond Center Court. UCO has crowned an individual regional champ and a doubles regional championship team in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019. The event was canceled in 2020. The winner of the ITA Regional advances to the fall national championships later next month in Rome, Ga.
