Lynch Leads UCO Past Bearcats

EDMOND (May 7) – Kylee Lynch threw a three-hit shutout and Central Oklahoma overcame another tough offensive outing to blank Northwest Missouri 2-0 in completing a sweep of the best-of-three series in the first round of the MIAA Tournament.

The No. 15-ranked Bronchos managed seven hits in the nightcap after collecting just three in a 3-2 first-game victory. UCO moved to 34-10 on the season in advancing to the semifinals.

Central will host that four-team event May 13-15 and is set to play Rogers State at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Hillcats swept Fort Hays State in their best-of-three series Friday.

"It wasn't pretty, but we got the job done," said eighth-year head coach Cody White, who picked up his 299th career win with the Bronchos. "Kylee threw well and our defense made some plays. We really struggled with the bats today, which is something we need to fix moving forward."

Lynch needed 93 pitches to record her 11th complete game of the season, giving up hits in the third, fifth and sixth innings. The left-hander struck out three and walked one in improving to 17-3.

The Bronchos scored single runs in each of the first two innings to grab an early 2-0 lead that held up the rest of the way.

Brighton Gilbert got things going in the first with a one-out single to left-center and went to second on a groundout before racing home on Hazel Puempel's single through the right side.

Amelya Huggins reached on a one-out fielder's choice in the second inning, advanced to second on Allie Eicher's base hit up the middle and chugged home on Taylor McKittrick's single to right-center.

Lynch escaped a huge jam in the fifth, when the Bearcats used  hit and error to put runners on second and third with no outs. The freshman fielded a grounder back to the circle for the first out, then right fielder Hazel Puempel and third baseman Shayla Harper snagged consecutive line-drives to keep NWMSU scoreless.

Harper made a sensational grab of a hard-hit drive down the third base line to start the seventh, then Lynch finished off her fourth shutout with a fly ball to right field and a strikeout.
