Coach Earns 300th Win as UCO Tops Hillcats

EDMOND (May 13) – Hazel Puempel belted a big two-run home run and Kylee Lynch had a sensational pitching performance to lead Central Oklahoma past Rogers State 3-1 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday afternoon.

The No. 14-ranked and regular-season champion Bronchos also handed eighth-year head coach Cody White his 300th career victory in advancing to Friday's 11 a.m. winner's bracket game against the Central Missouri-Missouri Southern winner.

UCO improved to 35-10 on the season, while the Hillcats fell to 32-14-1 and into a Friday loser's bracket game against the UCM-MSSU loser.

"We made a couple of defensive mistakes early, but they didn't end up hurting us and we came out with a big win," said White, who improved to 300-120 with the Bronchos. "We did a good job putting the ball in play and played well. There's still a lot of work to do."

Lynch gave up a hit on her first pitch of the game and the Hillcats ended up loading the bases with two hits and an error before UCO got out of the inning with a groundout.

The freshman left-handed dominated over the next four innings, retiring 11 batters during one stretch, before RSU scored its lone run in the sixth.

Lynch gave up four hits, didn't walk a batter and needed just 82 pitches to notch her 12th complete game of the season in improving to 18-3.

Neither team could score until the Bronchos finally broke through in the fifth.

Taylor McKittrick drew her second lead-off walk of the game to get things started, then Tarin Dubler moved pinch-runner Kayla Mantooth over with a sacrifice bunt. Brighton Gilbert followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners.

Mantooth trotted home on Jacee Minter's long sacrifice fly to right field for the game's first run and Puempel quickly made it 3-0 with her seventh homer of the season one, this one a bomb to straightaway center field.

UCO's best scoring chance early came in the third after McKittrick led off with a walk and Dubler followed with a single to center field. Gilbert's sacrifice bunt moved both runners over, but an infield pop-up and line out to left field ended the threat.

Gilbert had two of Central's five hits against MIAA Pitcher of the Year Andrea Morales.
