Central Blanks Northeastern

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma won its series opener at Northeastern State Friday, topping its longtime rival 9-0 in the first of three games between this weekend. Game 2 is later Friday.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead and never looked back Friday.

Philip Scott led off with a single in the top of the first and scored when Garrett Takamatsu followed him with a double to right center. Scott scored unearned after an error by the NSU center fielder.

Joe Mondragon drew a one-out walk in the inning before Shane Nixon singled through the left side to score Takamatsu. Mondragon scored on a double steal move that saw Nixon out in a rundown after Mondragon touched home plate to give UCO a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Central added one in the sixth on a Kyle Crowl leadoff solo home run to left center. That was his team-leading 10th of the season.

UCO added the last of its runs in the top of the eighth.

Ryan Harrel knocked a two-RBI single up the middle to score Bennett Laurence and Brett Hopkins. Crowl added a two-RBI single to left that scored Scott and Harrel. Mondragon added one more with an RBI single that scored Takamatsu and gave the Bronchos a 9-0 lead.

Luke Anderson started for the Bronchos Friday and was solid in 5 1/3 innings of work. Anderson threw 94 pitches and allowed just two hits and no runs. He struck out four in his start.

Kyler Patterson, Blake Bautz, and Lawson Isaacs finished off Northeastern with 3 2/3 scoreless innings. The trio struck out six and allowed just one hit over the final innings to bring UCO to the win.

Scott, Takamatsu, Crowl, Mondragon, and Nixon made up the 1-5 hitters for the Bronchos Friday and the group totaled 10 hits. Nixon led the charge, going 3-for-5. Takamatsu, Crowl and Mondragon each had two hits and Scott added the one leadoff hit.

Central Oklahoma improved to 22-16 with the win, its fourth in a row.
