Central Oklahoma Routs OC Eagles

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team wrapped up its 2021 home schedule Tuesday night with a rout of Oklahoma Christian, 11-2.

Central Oklahoma, which improved to 21-16 on the season with the win, also won the season series with OC two games to one.

"We did a lot of things the right way tonight," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We made some big plays and got after on offense and we got a lot of good work from our pitchers. That was a good game and now we have to get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma scored twice in the first, twice and the second, then doubled its total with four in the third inning. The Bronchos led 8-1 after three and never looked back in the win. Three more runs in the seventh gave the Bronchos their 11-2 lead.

Grant Larson got the start for Central Tuesday night and the 6-foot-7 lefty was brilliant in a three-inning outing. He struck out a season-high seven, allowed just two hits and one run and didn't issue any walks.

Central's staff got a boost from Larson's outing. The Bronchos used seven pitchers on the night and all of them totaled 15 strikeouts for UCO.

Lawson Isaacs struck out one in 1 1/3, Blake Bautz gave up one hit and one run in 2/3 of an inning, and Colton Croft struck out two in one inning of work. Jake Terry (three strikeouts), Owen Logan (one) and Zach Moore (one) all threw one inning each to close out the game.

Philip Scott was in the leadoff spot for UCO Tuesday and the senior infielder finished 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Joe Mondragon (2-for-3), Shane Nixon (2-for-5) and Ryan Harrel (3-for-4) all had multi-hit games. Nixon had one of three extra-base hits for the Bronchos.

Kyle Crowl drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first inning and he scored after Joe Mondragon moved him to third with a single to center field and the two followed up with a double steal to get Crowl across the plate and the Bronchos on the scoreboard. Nixon's double scored Mondragon to give UCO a 2-0 lead.

In the second, and again with two outs, Harrel singled to the OC shortstop and Scott followed with a single of his own. UCO got two runs when Takamatsu hit a deep fly ball to right field and the OC outfielder dropped it, scoring Harrel and Scott unearned to give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead.

Mondragon drew a leadoff walk in the third, then scored when Kameron Kilchrist singled to right field. Kilchrist scored when Carson Green doubled to center field.

Central's other two runs in the third came on back-to-back singles to the pitcher oddly enough.

With runners on the corners, Harrel laid down a squeeze bunt but everyone was safe on the play. Scott followed Harrel again with a single but his was a line drive off the OC pitcher's leg. Hopkins scored on Harrel's bunt single and Green scored on Scott's infield single. That made it 8-1 UCO.

Central went three-up, three-down in each of the next three innings before tacking on the last of its runs in the seventh.

Kilchrist scored Mondragon again with an RBI groundout to third. Hopkins scored Nixon with a single up the middle. And Harrel scored Hopkins with a single to center to make it 11-2, Bronchos.

Moore came on to pitch the ninth and struck out the first batter he faced. He issued a walk – the only walk of the game for the Bronchos – but then recovered with an unassisted groundout for the second out. A groundout to shortstop ended the game and gave the Bronchos the victory.

Central Oklahoma has just three regular season games left. The Bronchos travel to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Oklahoma this weekend for a three-game MIAA series. UCO will then find out which position it lands in the MIAA Tournament the following weekend.
