UCO Eliminated From MIAA Tourney

EDMOND (May 14) – Now Central Oklahoma plays the waiting game.

The No. 14-ranked Bronchos squandered numerous scoring chances and were ousted from the MIAA Tournament with a 3-2 loss to Rogers State Friday evening after having dropped a 3-2 extra-inning setback earlier in the day.

Central Missouri will play the Hillcats for the tournament championship Saturday, with the winner earning the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II national tournament.

UCO -- which captured the league's regular season title and was ranked second in the Central Region poll earlier this week – finds out Sunday night if it will receive an at-large bid. Six teams will make the Central Regional field, with that double-elimination tournament set for May 19-22 in Edmond.

"I still think we're in pretty good shape as far as getting into the regional, but it's no longer in our control and you just never know," head coach Cody White said. "We didn't play as well as we needed to today and that was disappointing."

The Bronchos had seven hits, drew six walks and also had two hit batters, but failed to capitalize and stranded 13 runners against RSU – including eight in scoring position.

Central left at least two runners on in each of the first six innings, including the fifth when the Bronchos loaded the bases with no outs and were unable to score.

"We had plenty of opportunities and just couldn't come up with the key hits when we needed them,"  White said. "We've got to do more offensively to take the pressure off our pitching and defense."

UCO manufactured a run in the top of the first to grab a quick 1-0 lead.

Tarin Dubler led off the game with a single to center field, stole second and went to third on a fielder's choice before scoring on Hazel Puempel's fielder's choice.

RSU took the lead in the bottom of the third, belting a pair of homers in going ahead 3-1.

It stayed that way until the sixth when the Bronchos pushed across their other run. Brighton Gilbert drove a one-out single up the middle and raced home on Jacee Minter's double to the right-center field gap to make it 3-2, but UCO left two more runners on base in the inning.

Dubler had two of Central's seven hits. The Hillcats managed just five hits against Kylee Lynch and Corrina Rivas.
