Bronchos Escape Arkansas Tech

EDMOND (May 19) – It wasn't quite the perfect ending Central Oklahoma envisioned, but the end result certainly was.
|
A two-out, bases-loaded error in the bottom of the seventh inning allowed the No. 14-ranked Bronchos to score two runs and stun Arkansas Tech 4-3 Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division II Central Regional.

UCO -- which outscored the Golden Suns 25-7 in a March 23 home doubleheader sweep -- managed just six hits, but took advantage of seven walks and three ATU errors to advance to Thursday's 2:30 p.m. semifinal contest against Minnesota State-Mankato.

"It wasn't pretty, but the goal is to advance and we did that," said head coach Cody White, whose team improved to 36-12. "We struggled offensively, but we found a way to get people on base and came out on top."

The Bronchos won it in the seventh without a hit. Brighton Gilbert led off with a walk Hazel Puempel reached on a one-out walk and Shayla Harper drew a two-out free pass to lead the bases for Lexy Dobson.

Dobson -- who had two of UCO's six hits and was celebrating her 22nd birthday -- lofted a deep fly ball that ATU's left fielder settled under and then dropped, allowing the tying and winning runs to cross the plate.

The Golden Suns strung together three hits in the top of the first inning to grab a quick 1-0 lead, with UCO coming back to tie it in the second.

Puempel drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the inning, Allie Eicher followed with a hard-hit single to left field and Dobson plated the tying run with a one-out bloop single to right.

ATU went back in front 2-1 in the third, with a pair of fine defensive plays preventing more scores.

Pitcher Kylee Lynch fielded a slow-rolling bunt and flipped the ball to catcher Amelya Huggins to get a runner at the plate on a squeeze bunt try, then Dobson made a nice running grab in right-center to end the inning.

The Golden Suns pushed their lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth, with UCO getting one run back in their half of the inning.

Jacee Minter laced a one-out double to the right-center field gap and Puempel followed with an infield single to put runners on first and third, with Minter scoring on a two-out error.

The Bronchos stayed within a run by escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh when second baseman Tarin Dubler snared a hard-hit liner and doubled a runner of first.

And that set the stage for Central's game-winning rally.
