UCO Falls To Lopers In Nightcap

EDMOND (April 30) – A controversial call in the eighth inning helped end Central Oklahoma's long winning streak Friday afternoon in the second game of a doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney.

The No. 13-ranked Bronchos gave up two eighth-inning runs in dropping a 5-3 decision. UCO, which had won 20 straight home games dating back to last year, fell to 30-10 overall and 19-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

UNK, which improved to 15-25 and 6-18 with the upset, started the top of the eighth with a quick out. The second batter appeared to hit into groundout to third base, but the three-man umpiring crew – after a lengthy meeting – ruled it was a foul ball.

That player singled two pitches later and the Lopers went on to score a pair of two-out runs to break a 3-3 tie. The Bronchos couldn't answer in the bottom of the eighth and the streak was over.

"We didn't play well enough to win," head coach Cody White said. "It's a tough loss, but we just have to put it behind us and get ready for two big games tomorrow."

UCO closes the regular season with a noon doubleheader against Fort Hays State, needing a sweep to clinch at least a share of the conference title.

The Bronchos broke a scoreless deadlock in the third inning with a pair of runs.

Amelya Huggins led off the inning with a line-drive double to center field, went to third on Brighton Gilbert's sacrifice bunt and scored the game's first run on Tarin Dubler's single up the middle.

Shayla Harper followed with a single through the left side, the Jacee Minter's single to left field made it 2-0.

UNK answered back with three runs in the top of the fourth to move in front 3-2 and it stayed that way until the sixth when the Bronchos pulled even.

Hazel Puempel led off with a four-pitch walk, went to second on a ground-out and tied it up when Allie Eicher drove a two-out single up the middle. A base hit by Huggins and walk to Gilbert loaded the bases, but a long fly out ended the inning.

UCO finished with nine hits, getting two apiece from Dubler, Harper and Huggins.
