UCO Subdues Tigers In Opener

EDMOND (May 1) – Allie Eicher belted a two-run home run to help Central Oklahoma take an early lead and the No. 13-ranked Bronchos went on to topple Fort Hays State 5-3 in the first game of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

Kylee Lynch went the distance in the pitching circle for the Bronchos, who moved to 31-10 on the season and 20-5 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play. The Tigers fell to 24-19 and 17-8.

UCO clinched a top-two finish in the regular season league standings. The Bronchos can secure at least a share of the title and the No. 1 seed for the MIAA Tournament with a win in Saturday's second game.

"It was a good win for us," head coach Cody White said. "We played hard and didn't make many mistakes. Now we need to come out and do it again in the second game."

UCO needed just one hit to open up a 3-0 lead after two innings.

The Bronchos scored once in the first when Brighton Gilbert reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a throwing error on Hazel Puempel's grounder.

Amelya Huggins was hit by pitch with one out in the second and Eicher followed with Central's first hit of the game. And it was a long hit, as Eicher smoked a line-drive over the left field wall for her fourth homer of the season.

The Tigers came back with a two-run homer of their own in the top of the third after a two-out error extended the inning.

UCO made it 4-2 in the bottom of that frame when Puempel bashed a one-out triple off the left field wall and then scored on Shayla Harper's sacrifice fly.

The Bronchos added another score in the fourth. Huggins led off with a walk, Eicher singled through the right side and both runners advanced on Taylor McKittrick's sacrifice bunt before Tarin Dubler drove an RBI single through the left side.

FHSU got within 5-3 in the top of the fifth, but Lynch retired nine straight batters to end the game. She needed just four pitches to retire the side in the top of the seventh to wrap up her 10th complete game of the season.

Lynch scattered five hits in giving up one earned run while walking two and striking out one. The freshman left-hander improved to 16-3 on the season.

Central managed seven hits, with Eicher getting two of those.
