UCO Beats Washburn To Open Series

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Washburn 5-3 Friday night in the first of three MIAA games at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 11-8 overall with the win and is now 7-6 in league play. Games 2 & 3 are scheduled for tomorrow. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.

"Our pitching was solid tonight and that carried us," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got some runs early and got a lead and defense carried us. We need to produce a little more tomorrow."

Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos and nearly threw a complete game, going eight innings. He picked up the win for his efforts, which included six hits, three runs and a walk. Anderson struck out nine Friday night.

Jacob Bailey picked up the save, throwing one inning and striking out one batter – the final batter of the game.

Central Oklahoma scored all five of its runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Trailing 1-0, Zac Freeman led off with a walk, then stole second before Bennett Laurence drew a walk of his own. Ryan Harrel followed that with a single through the right side that scored Freeman and tied the game, 1-1.

Harrel then stole second to put two runners in scoring position and Colton Bertus drew a third walk to load the bases. That prompted a Washburn pitching change, but the next guy out of the bullpen walked Joe Mondragon. Laurence scored on the play to give UCO a 2-1 lead.

Kyle Crowl then slapped a single up the middle to score Harrel and Bertus and give the Bronchos a 4-1 lead. Mondragon scored on the next play when Garrett Takamatsu reached on a fielder's choice. Crowl was out in a rundown between second and third and Mondragon trotted home to give the Bronchos a 5-1 lead.

Washburn got one back in the fourth inning and one more in the ninth to make it the final, 5-3.

Crowl led the Bronchos at the plate Friday night, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Takamatsu, Philip Scott, Cacy Harper and Harrel each had hits. The Bronchos only managed six hits in the game and all were singles.
