Gilbert's Heroics Help UCO Sweep Lions

EDMOND (March 9) – Brighton Gilbert's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Central Oklahoma to a thrilling 5-4 first-game win and the Bronchos went on to sweep a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader from Missouri Southern Wednesday.

Gilbert's heroics capped a last-gasp rally in the opener and UCO rode the momentum in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the first two innings en route to a 9-0 run-rule rout.

"This team just doesn't give up and they found a way in the first game," head coach Cody White said. "We had some big-time at bats in that last inning, especially from Brighton to win it. That really gave us a spark for the second game and we took advantage of it."

The Bronchos improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in the league while dropping MSSU to 6-6 and 1-3. UCO returns to conference play Wednesday with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Northeastern State.

Central trailed 4-3 entering its final at bat in the first game and the Lions tallied a quick out before Mikayla Rutland got things going with a double down the left field line. Halley Randolph was hit by pitch, then pinch-runners Shayleigh Odom and Shayla Harper each advanced a base on Tarin Dubler's long fly out.

It came down to Gilbert and the junior shortstop was up to the task, ripping a double up the middle to score both runs and give the Bronchos a dramatic victory.

Hazel Puempel went 4-for-4 at the play to lead an eight-hit attack, while Corrina Rivas picked up the pitching win with three innings of relief work.

UCO took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth of the back-and-forth contest on Lexy Dobson's sacrifice fly, but the Lions scored twice in the top of the sixth to move in front and it stayed that way until the faithful seventh.

UCO wasted little time taking charge in the nightcap. Jacee Minter and Puempel delivered one-out RBI doubles before Allie Eicher launched a two-run homer to left-center field to put the Bronchos on top 4-0.

It became an 8-0 cushion in the second as Gilbert came through with a two-run single to center field while Eicher added an RBI walk and Dobson a run-scoring fielder's choice.

Harper made it 9-0 in the third with her first collegiate homer as the freshman ripped a solo shot to left-center.

Minter went 3-for-3 and Harper had two hits to pace a 10-hit assault. Rivas earned her second pitching win of the day, giving up just one hit in the first four innings before Bailey McKittrick finished it off in the fifth.
