Mae Canete Named MIAA Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Monday that University of Central Oklahoma freshman tennis player Mae Canete is the league's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week.

Central's freshman phenom continued her perfect start to her Broncho career with two more straight-set victories as UCO opened league play this past weekend. Canete won 6-1, 6-2 Saturday at Nebraska Kearney and then won 6-0, 6-1 Sunday at Fort Hays State.

Canete is 8-0 in singles competition this season. In nine matches, she's won 17 of 19 sets played. The L.A. kid had one match unfinished.

She also went 2-0 in doubles play this week as UCO, ranked No. 5 in the country, won 7-0 in both of its matches to start league play.

Central Oklahoma is 8-1 this season (2-0 in the MIAA) and has three wins over nationally ranked opponents. The Bronchos are in action thrice this week. No. 5 UCO takes on No. 17 Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas on Wednesday. The Bronchos beat then-ranked No. 16 MSU in Edmond in February by a score of 7-0. Central Oklahoma will also play host to No. 19 Washburn (Friday) and Northwest Missouri (Saturday) at Broncho Courts.
