Tennis Picks Up A Dozen Wins In Season Opener

First Tournament For Head Coach Grace Chadick Sees Wins Up And Down The Lineup

LAWTON, Okla. – Central Oklahoma won 10 matches at a two-day Cameron Invite this weekend to get the 2026-27 season started.

Anika Ouwejan, Dilay Ata, and Haley Hibbets each advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets, with Hibbets reaching the final of her group. All-American Mei Hasegawa dropped her first match but responded with two more wins in straight sets. Hui Soo also lost her first match before winning two more.

UCO also go three wins in doubles play this weekend. Hasegawa and Ouwejan advanced the to the semifinals, Ayaka Kogo and Soo advanced to the quarterfinals, and Hibbets and Ata countered an opening loss with a win in the back draw.

"This weekend was a great opportunity for all of the girls," UCO head women's tennis coach Grace Chadick said. "It was great to see all the girls compete for the first time as a team and it was great experience which makes not only me but the whole team excited to compete together for the whole year."

Ouwejan started her senior season with a win over Lubbock Christian's Lili Kovacs-Sebestyen, 6-2, 2-6 (10-6) in the A Flight Singles Bracket. She lost her semifinal match to Emilia Gyorgy of Midwestern State, 6-1, 6-2. Hasegawa lost to MSU's Victoria Vieten, 6-4, 4-6 (10-6), but then picked up two wins later in the tournament against Cameron's Marie-Alex Urcan, 6-4, 6-3 and LCU's Kovacs-Sebestyen, 6-2, 6-3.

In the doubles tournament quarterfinals, Ouwejan and Hasegawa teamed up in doubles play and defeated Franco and Moreno Villa of LCU, 6-1. Soo and Ata paired together and won in the round of 16 7-5 over Lubbock Christian's Naghely Garcia Galian and Kristel Jativa. Soo and Koga lost 6-4 to Gyorgy and Dolce in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Ouwejan and Hasegawa lost 6-4.

UCO had similar results in the B Flight. Ata won her season opener, 1-6, 6-4 (10-3) over Cameron's Nil Kalkavan before losing in the semifinals to Midwestern State's Camila Garcia Morales, 6-3, 6-2. Soo lost her first match, 6-3, 6-4, to Lubbock Christian's Kristel Jativa, but then won twice later in the tournament over Daniela Maldonado of Cameron, 3-6, 6-2 (10-5), and Naghely Garcia Galian, LCU, 7-5, 6-1.

In the C Flight, Hibbets won in the quarterfinals and received a bye in the semifinals. In the final, she lost 6-1, 6-2. Quick went 0-2 in the C Flight. Brylee Toney went 0-3 in D Flight group play.

UCO had two more doubles teams. Hibbets and Ata lost their first match, 6-3, to Cameron's Alexa Garcia and Alexa Lugo Ruiz, who also beat Quick and Toney in the next round, 7-5.

Central Oklahoma has two more fall events, Oct. 2-3 at the Washburn Invite in Topeka, Kansas, and Oct. 23-25 when the Bronchos host the ITA Central Regional at Edmond Center Court. The singles and doubles winners with potential at-large bids can advance to the ITA Cup in November in Alabama.
