Rivas, Eicher Give UCO Sunday Split

EMPORIA, Kan. (March 21) – Corrina Rivas pitched a six-hit shutout and Allie Eicher drove in both Central Oklahoma runs as the No. 23-ranked Bronchos trimmed Sioux Falls 2-0 Sunday afternoon to salvage a split on the second day of the Hy-Vee Classic.

UCO dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 3 Augustana in Sunday's first game, losing a run on a bizarre first-inning play and falling to another late rally by the Vikings.

The Bronchos, who lost to Augie 10-8 in extra innings Saturday, beat USF twice in the weekend event. UCO is now 14-6 on the season.

"I think it says a lot about our team when they can come back and get re-focused so soon after a really hard loss," head coach Cody White said. "Losing to Augie like we did for the second straight day was very disappointing, but we didn't have time to feel sorry for ourselves.

"Corrina pitched great against Sioux Falls to keep us in the game. Allie has been unbelievable at the plate all year and she came up big for us again."

Central took a quick 1-0 lead against the Cougars in the bottom of the first inning. Jacee Minter lined a two-out double to left-center field, Hazel Puempel followed with a walk and then Eicher delivered an RBI single up the middle.

Neither team really threatened again until the sixth when the Bronchos scored the only other run of the game, again with two outs. Puempel drilled a double to right field and Eicher promptly drove her home with another base hit up the middle.

Eicher came through with a stellar defensive play at first base in the top of the seventh to squelch a USF rally. The Cougars put runners on first and second with consecutive one-out singles, but Eicher ended the game when she snared a line drive and then stepped on the first base bag to complete a game-ending double play.

Rivas scattered six hits in her fourth complete-game outing of the season. The junior right-hander walked two and struck out two in improving to 7-2.

Eicher had two of UCO's five hits in the contest.

The Bronchos managed eight hits in their opening-game loss to Augie, getting two each from Minter, Brighton Gilbert and Lexy Dobson.

Gilbert and Minter were involved in a weird first-inning sequence that cost UCO a run. Gilbert was on first with a one-out single when Minter belted a home run over the left-center field fence, but Gilbert was called out after missing second base to leave the Bronchos with a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings tied the game in the third and went ahead 2-1 in the fifth.

Central regained the lead in the top of the seventh with a pair of scores.

Puempel led off the inning with a homer to left-center to tie it and Eicher followed with a double to left. Lexy Dobson singled to move Kayla Mantooth – pinch-running for Eicher – to third and Mantooth scored on Taylor McKittrick's fielder's choice to make it 3-2.

But the Bronchos couldn't hold on. Augie started the bottom of the seventh with a double and single, made it 3-3 on a fielder's choice grounder and ended up scoring the game-winning run on an error.

UCO returns home Tuesday to host Arkansas Tech for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before returning to Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play with home twinbills Friday and Saturday.
