UCO Rallies To Win In Extras

JOPLIN, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team finished off a three-game MIAA series with a wild 11-6 10-inning victory Saturday night at Missouri Southern.

The Bronchos improved to 8-6 with the win and are now 5-4 in league play.

"It was good to finish with a win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We didn't get it done yesterday and earlier today and we really needed to fight and get this last one."

Central had a huge 10th inning that started when Kameron Kilchrist singled down the first base line with one out. Kyle Crowl reached on a fielder's choice after that and Kilchrist was out on the play, but the rally was about to begin.

Cacy Harper singled through the left side. Then Philip Scott singled through the left side to score Crowl. After Brendan Ezell was hit by a pitch, Ryan Harrel singled to center field to score both Scott and Harper and put the Bronchos up 9-6.

After an MSSU pitching change, Zac Freeman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Ezell scored, and then Colton Bertus drew a walk, with Harrel scoring to put the Bronchos up 11-6.

Beaux Bonvillain, who gave up two in the ninth to tie the game, did give up a single and a walk in the bottom of the 10th but closed out the game and the Broncho victory.

Bertus led six UCO batters with multiple hits. He went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Joe Mondragon went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Kilchrist went 2-for-3 after pinch-hitting for Mondragon in the ninth, and Crowl went 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.

Scott went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Harrel went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Harper and Kaden Marshall also had hits in the game.

Bonvillain got the win for the Bronchos. After coming in in the bottom of the eighth and giving up two runs on three hits and three walks, the junior lefty finished off the Lions in the 10th.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead in Game 3 Saturday evening. Bertus led off the game with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before Mondragon singled to the pitcher and moved Bertus to third. Then Mondragon stole second but as he did, an MSSU error allowed both Bertus and Mondragon to score and give UCO a 2-0 lead.

Central made it 3-0 in the third. Mondragon hit a two-out double to center field and Crowl followed with an RBI double to right center.

The Bronchos led 5-0 in the fourth inning. Harrel reached on a fielder's choice after Ezell had drawn a walk. Ezell reached second on the play thanks to another Southern error. He also advanced to third after the miscue. Marshall followed that with an RBI single to left field. And after Freeman walked to load the bases, Bertus slapped an RBI single to right field that scored Harrel and gave Central the 5-0 lead.

Missouri Southern got two bases loaded strikeouts to get out of the top of the fourth, then answered back with three runs in the bottom half to make it 5-3.

UCO got one more in the top of the sixth. Bertus singled with one out and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. There, with two outs, Crowl smashed a double down the left field line to score Bertus and give the Bronchos a 6-3 lead.

Grant Larson got the start for the Bronchos in Game 3. The senior lefty threw five innings and gave up three runs on six hits and three walks. Larson had one strikeout. Jacob Bailey relieved Larson in the sixth and threw 2 1/3 innings, registering five strikeouts. He did allow one hit and one run and one walk.

Central had a chance to maybe put the game away in the seventh and the eighth. The Bronchos left the bases loaded in the seventh and left runners on second and third in the eighth.

Bonvillain came on in the bottom of the eighth with two on and one out. He recorded a strikeout, gave up a walk, then recorded another strikeout to get out of the jam with Central still ahead 6-4. But Bonvillain gave up two more in the ninth on two hits and another walk as Southern sent the game to extras.

Central Oklahoma will get a short break from the action with no midweek game scheduled next week. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Pittsburg State for a three-game MIAA series next weekend, beginning with the doubleheader Saturday before Game 3 next Sunday.
