Central Oklahoma Rallies Past Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Henderson State 7-5 Sunday to close out the HSU Invitational with a win.

The Bronchos, now 4-2 on the season, went 2-1 on the weekend in Arkadelphia.

"We had to fight for it today and the guys did," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We weren't sharp in a few spots and we need to fix that, but the guys did a good job responding and we got the win. That's what matters."

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead Sunday morning. Kyle Crowl smacked an RBI double in the top of the first inning that scored Philip Scott, who drew a four-pitch walk earlier in the inning. That gave the Bronchos a 1-0 lead.

Henderson State got one back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring on an RBI groundout. And then the Reddies took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch that followed a triple.

Central responded though, tying the game in the sixth. Joe Mondragon got on base and would later score on a sacrifice-fly by Bennett Laurence.

In the seventh, UCO's Garrett Takamatsu was hit by a pitch after Scott drew a leadoff walk. Crowl followed that with a two-RBI double to right center that put the Bronchos up 4-2. Crowl scored himself when Mondragon knocked a sacrifice fly to center field.

Henderson again responded to the Central lead and scored three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, 5-5.

But Central had the final answer.

Laurence led off the eighth with a solo home run. And Crowl led off the ninth with the same. That latter putting the Bronchos up 7-5.

Henderson State got one more back in the ninth, but Beaux Bonvillian closed it out to earn the save and the send the Bronchos to a win.

Crowl finished the day 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a home run. He had four RBIs on the day. He accounted for four of Central's seven hits on the day. Scott, Brett Hopkins, and Laurence had the other three.

Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos. The junior right-hander went 4 1/3, allowed six hits and two runs while striking out four. Brady Smith and Kyler Patterson both struck out three in relief. Patterson earned his first career win for throwing two innings late. Bonvillain relieved Patterson in the ninth and struck out one in the final frame.

Central Oklahoma will return home for its midweek contest. The Bronchos host East Central Wednesday night at Wendell Simmons Field.
