Central Smashes Newman To Take Series

EDMOND – Bennett Laurence belted eight RBIs Sunday afternoon to lead an onslaught of Bronchos battering Newman at every turn and the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat the Jets 14-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 12-3 on the season with the win and are now 2-1 in league play following the conference series win over Newman.

Laurence went 3-for-3 with a single, a grand slam, and then a three-run home run for a total of eight RBIs, which is tied for the second-most in school history.

The freshman from Rockwell, Texas singled to right center in the bottom of the second inning and later scored in the inning. He drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the third for his first RBI of the day. In the sixth, after Philip Scott and Garrett Takamatsu drew walks, and Joe Mondragon singled to right, Laurence smacked a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right field for a grand slam. Back up in the eighth, this time with Mondragon and Cacy Harper on in front of him, he pelted a 1-1 pitch over the scoreboard in left field for a three-run home to collect his eighth RBI on the day.

Laurence improved his season totals to an astonishing 6-for-17 with four home runs – two grand slams – and now a team-high 15 RBIs in just his seventh game of the year.

Laurence was the only one working the bat Sunday. UCO scattered a season-high 18 hits on the day, with three players knocking three hits each. Three more had a pair of hits in the game. Nine of 10 Bronchos that stood in the box Sunday collected a hit.

Colton Bertus finished 3-for-5 with three singles and one RBI. Takamatsu went 3-for-4 with a solo home run, two singles, and three runs scored. And Laurence went 3-for-3.

Mondragon went 2-for-6 with a pair of singles. Harper went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two RBIs, and three runs scored. And Carson Green went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Zac Freeman, Scott, and Dru Barrier also had hits on the day. Freeman had an RBI single and also scored a run. Scott scored twice.

Central Oklahoma threw Luke Anderson to start the game and the junior righty went four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He walked four batters but also struck out four.

Chandler Shapard, who picked up the win in relief, threw one inning and struck out three. Jake Terry, Jacob Bailey, Kylar Patterson, and Beaux Bonvillain all threw one inning out of the bullpen as well. Bailey and Patterson struck out one each, while Bonvillain struck out two, including one looking for the final out of the game.

The Broncho pitching staff totaled 11 strikeouts on the afternoon. The bullpen allowed no hits and just two walks while striking out seven.

Central Oklahoma will remain at home for a midweek non-conference matchup against Southwestern Oklahoma State this Wednesday before hitting the road for another MIAA series. The Bronchos take on Fort Hays State next weekend in Hays, Kan. for a three-game set starting Friday.
