Dylan Hall Strikes Out 14 In Central Victory

EDMOND – Dylan Hall struck out every batter that Metro State put in the box Friday afternoon and the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat MSU 3-1 in a non-conference matchup at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos improved to 7-2 with the win.

"We didn't play well on offense today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We got a break late and that was the difference, but fortunately, Dylan was really good and did his job and put us in a position to win. Hats off to him for carrying us through today."

Hall struck out the first two batters of the day – both looking – and set the tone for record day. The senior righty from Stafford, Va. went on to strike out 14 batters, each batter Metro State sent to the plate at least once, and tied a school record for most strikeouts in a single game.

Hall struck out 14 in a game last April as well. It's just the fifth instance in school history a Broncho has struck out 14.

Hall struck out two in the first and one in the second. He sat down three in the third and fourth inning, all looking. After not recording a strikeout in the fifth, Hall struck out one in the sixth and one in the seventh. He struck out to in the eighth. And then one final K in the ninth.

His final stat line of the day: 9 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, and 14 strikeouts.

Garrett Takamatsu put UCO ahead in a hurry Friday. The junior catcher swung at the first pitch he saw with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. The result? A solo home run off the scoreboard in left field.

The game remained 1-0 for the next six innings.

UCO took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a bit of an odd play. Dru Barrier reached on a fielder's choice with two outs in the inning, but as MSU attempted to get the force out at second base, Brock Schaffer beat the tag sliding into the bag. Kyle Crowl, who singled to leadoff the inning, scored from third on the play, and Joe Mondragon, who walked with one out in the inning, scored all the way from second as Metro State froze following the safe call at second base.

The 3-0 lead was more than enough for Hall, who gave up a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning.

UCO only had three hits on the day Friday. Takamatsu's solo home run in the first, a single in the third in which he was thrown out at second base, and Crowl's single in the seventh.

The Bronchos and Metro State will play a pair of games Saturday to wrap up the three-game series. UCO is moving Sunday's game up to Saturday evening to avoid the potential threat of rain.
