Central Completes Sweep of Metro State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Metro State – Denver Saturday, winning 10-3 in the first game before a 9-2 win in the nightcap.

Central Oklahoma improved to 9-2 on the season with the wins, which also completed a three-game sweep of MSU, and pushed the Broncho win streak to six games.

"We hit the ball well today," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We rely on our pitchers a lot and sometimes we only need to give them a few runs, but it was good to see them put a lot of hits on the board and a lot of runs on the board."

Central Oklahoma won Game 1 behind a well-rounded offensive outburst. The Bronchos scored 10 runs on eight hits, with Colton Bertus and Garrett Takamatsu providing a pair of hits each. Both had one double, as did Philip Scott.

Joe Mondragon's in-the-park grand slam was highlight of the day. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, already ahead 5-0, Mondragon hit a deep fly ball to left field. The MSU outfielders lost it late and never saw it bounce between them. Kyle Crowl, Scott, and Takamatsu all scored before Mondragon, who raced around the bases with lightning speed to make it 9-0, UCO.

Mondragon was just 1-for-4 on the day, but his four RBIs were more than enough.

Brayden Belden got the start for the Bronchos in the first game. The senior lefty has had a tough start to his season, but was solid Saturday. Belden threw five innings, allowed six hits and three runs, but struck out five in picking up his first win as a Broncho.

Colton Croft earned a save for his four-inning relief stint. Croft struck out six more MSU Roadrunners while allowing just two hits over the final four innings of play.

Bertus finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Takamatsu was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Scott went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Carson Green also went 1-for-3 with an RBI and also scored twice.

In Game 2, Luke Anderson got the start for the Bronchos and the junior right-hander shined. Anderson threw six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. He struck out a season-high nine batters. Anderson also got way more run support than he needed in the six shutout innings.

Takamatsu opend the game with a three-RBI home run to left center field that scored Scott and Bertus. Bennett Laurence added an RBI single to center field to score Zac Freeman too. All that happened in the first inning. UCO never looked back.

Scott slapped an RBI single in the second to score Ryan Harrel and Freeman drew a bases-loaded walk to score Bertus and give the Bronchos a 6-0 lead after two.

Freeman added another with a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Mondragon. Dru Barrier scored in the fifth on a delayed steal with runners on the corners. And Cacy Harper, who smacked ball to the left side of the infield, reached on an error on the play, and Mondragon scored to make it 9-0 UCO in the sixth inning.

MSU added two late runs.

Jake Terry struck out one batter in the seventh, Chandler Shapard struck out one in the eighth and allowed one run, and Owen Logan allowed one run in the ninth as he closed out the Broncho victory.

Bertus led the Bronchos with three hits in Game 2. The redshirt freshman second baseman went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Scott finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Takamatsu was 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Mondragon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Freeman and Barrier both went two-for, with Freeman finishing 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored and Barrier going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

Central Oklahoma scattered 13 hits in the second game, including four extra-base knocks.

UCO will take its six-game win streak on the road next week for a non-conference midweek matchup. The Bronchos will face Oklahoma Baptist – which handed Central its last defeat – Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla.
