Central Oklahoma Blanks Northwestern

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Northwestern Oklahoma State 5-0 Tuesday night in a non-conference game at Wendell Simmons Field.

Central Oklahoma improved to 6-2 on the season with the win. The Bronchos have now won three in a row following Tuesday's shutout.

"We played well today early, and that was a good thing to see," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We were aggressive early and you like to see that. They played good."

Central Oklahoma wasted no time putting runs on the board Tuesday. Garrett Takamatsu hit a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the first to score Zac Freeman, who drew a leadoff walk.

In the second, Freeman got back up to the plate and slapped a single to right field that scored Brice West, who reached on a fielder's choice before that. Chase Freeman, who walked after West's fielder's choice and Carson Green singled, scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

Central added to it in the bottom of the fifth. Takamatsu drew a leadoff walk and Colton Bertus smoked an RBI triple to right center that scored Takamatsu and gave the Bronchos a 4-0 lead.

A similar sixth gave the Bronchos another run. Green led off with a walk and advanced to second on Chase  Freeman's hit by pitch. Philip Scott then singled to center to score Green and give the Bronchos a 5-0 lead.

Nick Vickers picked up the win Tuesday. The junior lefty got the start and threw 4 2/3 shutout innings for Central. Vickers struck out four in his outing. Vickers didn't allow a hit through four innings.

Colton Croft (1.1), Jacob Bailey (1.0), Kyler Patterson (1.0), and Brayden Nelson (1.0) all came out of the bullpen to stimmy Northwestern. The relievers combined to allow just one hit over 4 1/3 and only walked one batter.

Joe Mondragon led the Bronchos at the plate Tuesday night. The senior designated hitter went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of singles. He also stole a base.

Scott finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Zac  Freeman, Bertus, and Green all had one hit to help Central to eight on the night.
