Central Oklahoma Hosts East Central

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team hosts East Central Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference clash at Wendell Simmons Field.
 
The Bronchos are 4-2 on the season, having won 2 of 3 in each of the first two weekends. East Central is 2-4 on the season, winning 1 of 3 in each of the first two weekends.
 
"We always have some good battles with East Central," UCO head coach John Martin said. "We need to come out focused and energized and try to get after them early. It'll be a good opportunity for some of our guys to step up too and find out who wants to be the midweek guys."
 
Central comes into Wednesday's game looking to improve on its team earned run average of 4.08. The Bronchos do have 74 total strikeouts from its pitching staff, which ranks second in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. UCO is also holding its opponents to a meager .252 batting average.
 
Offensively, UCO boasts a team batting average of .271, but the Bronchos are led by a pair of players hitting over .400.
 
Brett Hopkins, a junior transfer and right fielder, has a team-high .421 average through six games played. The Granite, Okla. native is a combined 8-for-19 with five runs scored and also owns a team-high eight RBIs. Hopkins's eight hits include one double, one triple, and one home run.
 
Crowl, a senior shortstop, is hitting .409 through six games played this season. The Council Bluffs, Iowa native is 9-for-22 with six doubles and seven runs scored. He also has one home run and five RBIs.
 
Philip Scott is also a key contributor on offense. The senior third baseman from Tulsa, Okla. is 7-for-22 (.318) in six games played this season. Scott has six runs scored, three doubles, one home run, and five RBIs.
 
East Central has a team batting average of .190 through six games played this season and averages 3.1 runs per game. Defensively, ECU boasts a 5.80 earned run average and opponents are hitting .309 against the Tigers of Ada, Okla.
 
Central Oklahoma will be off this weekend following its midweek clash with East Central. The Bronchos will have another midweek next week, hosting Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
